I have a 96 Geo Prizm with a 1.6 in it. Battery got to where it wouldn't hold a charge so I replace with a brand new one with 540 cca. All was fine again but a month later when driving down the road at night my lights will dim every time I hit the brake. If I turn everything on in my car everything dims.

So today I pull out the multimeter. With everything off I get 13.5-14v ok that seems like a good number. So now I go inside the car and turn on the A/C, bright lights, hazard lights and 2 amps powering 4 speakers and a sub. Multimeter drops in the 12v range.

So am I just putting to much on this little car with the amps and all or is my alternator not what it once was? I've had these amps in the car for over a year with no issues up until now. I am certain its the original alternator and the car has 160k on it.

Yea sounds like a bad Alt. Probably a bad voltage regulator. But that is internal for that alt so unless you know how to rebuild just buy a reman one and replace.

Yes bad alt. It should be able to hold at least 13v at idle even with heavy load.

OP, if you want a "professional" opinion drive it down to an auto parts distributor that does alternator checking for free.

They will also (conveniently) sell you a replacement if yours is bad.
