alternatives to mandrake

Ive been toying with Mandrake 8.0 for the last couple of days(my first linux experience), but it is way to slow for my liking. Konquerer and explorer(or whatever the graphical file manager is) take 7 or 8 seconds to load, and the whole thing just strikes me as too bloated. I'm running a celeron 500 with 192MB RAM. As far as installing another distribution, what can you guys recommend besides the mandrake series? I want something as fast as windows is, but of course with the reliability of linux. Keep in mind that Im a newbie so I dont want to be recompiling kernels or anything just yet. Thanks.

Linux is slow for you because there is truckloads of stuff compiled into the kernel that you don't need. No distro can fix that.

You need to learn how to recompile your kernel.

Mandrake for me was noticably slower than Redhat, and I've heard that Redhat is a bit heavy on the bloat.

I had the same experience with Mandrake. I switched to RedHat and love it. RH runs much smoother.

Try SuSe or Red Hat, everyone has preferences, mine is mandrake 7.02....

Thanks for the replies, it looks like I'm going to give Red Hat a try.

Synchronicity: When I installed Mandrake there were a lot of options for components to install. I checked to install all of them, since I have tons of disk space and figured the extra stuff might come in handy. Would having chosen to install all of that stuff slow down my whole system or is the extra stuff you speak of a different matter?

What he's referring to is just the fact that the stock kernel comes with everything built in, well just about everything. Most of that stuff is modularized though and I don't see that as a huge problem.

Since you've gone ahead and fessed up now , yes, installing all of that "stuff" would certainly slow it down. You're probably running all sorts of daemons that you don't need. Lot's of crap running in user space. Yup, that'll slow it up.

Remember, Linux is NOT Windows. It is a multiuser system. It can be configured as a desktop system (not it's strong point IMO) and it can also be configured as a server.

try redhat with the ximian gnome add-ons you'll love it and it makes upgrading very easy!
