Alternatives to IPMonster?

Hi - I was excited to learn about IPMonster (www.ipmonster.com) in that the program allows you to identify your external (WAN side) IP address - great for playing games or for setting up FTP/Webisites. But for some reason it doesn't appear to be working for me. The IP address that comes back is about 5-6 hops away at a router at my ISP. It is NOT my WAN IP address that is identified by all the other web-based IP ID pages out there. I'm not exactly sure what is happening here, and my tech support emails to IPMonster have gone unanswered.

Are there alternatives to IPMonster - something that will allow you to determine your external WAN-side IP address, and something that allows you to determine this IP address while at a remote location? IPMonster was cool in that it emailed you when your dynamic IP address changed - I need a feature something like that as I wish to be notified when my dynamic IP address changes, but I won't be at the computer to determine it first-hand. As an alternative to email, possibly the WAN IP address could be posted on a webpage or something.

TIA,

Strange! IP Monster is very Good.

Try this:
Dynamicip30

:sun:

Thats why I added VNC. Use your browser through your browser.
I am probably missing something.

If you know the Extrnal IP in order to use VNC why do you need to find the External IP?

Catch22 of some sort?

Sign up for an account at DynDNS, or one of the many other free dynamic DNS alternatives.

There are many software programs out there (most of the good ones are open source) that will update the dynamic DNS info for you automatically while you are away. If you decide to go with DynDNS, the Dynksys Dynamic IP Updater is probably a good choice.

There is a difference between DNS and External IP by email.

I do not want to leave my computer with a Running server. I just want to connect from my computer using VNC when I am on the road.

Under such circumstances I do not need DNS service; I just want to know my external IP.

IPmonster and similar send an email from my computer to my Webmail and I can get my IP.

No need for any third party intervention.

I understand... I was answering Snacko's original question. :)

Edit

Why are you trying to avoid third party intervention? Obviously a dynamic DNS setup will work for you too. Just curious...

Thanks guys for the assistance. I have since tried dynamicIP and I am still trying to get it to work. The email option is giving me an ERROR221, and since there is no error documentation I am just spinning my wheels. The same email configuraiton info I entered into dynamicIP was the same I used in IPMonster, so I don't thing I got the config wrong or my email servers can't handle it.

I have also tried to use the webpage option for viewing the IP, but again, with sparse documentation I am only stabbing at a solution. I'm not expert enough with HTML to figure out the special tags and how they are implemented, and the lack of documentation isn't helping.

I'm with JackMDS on this one: I'd prefer not to get a 3rd level of notificaiton involved. The simplicity of an email notification appeals to me. Having the dynamic domain services involved just increases the complexity. I won't rule it out just yet - I just want to get the email thing working...

Hey Guys - just thought I would pass this along:

http://www.barefootinc.com/

This product works for me, and IMHO is better than IPMonster and dynamicIP, in that it has a better interface and it works, at least works for me.

I'm still interested as to why IPMonter is pulling a router IP address as my WAN address when all the other webpages/programs don't.

If you want to connect to your PC via VNC from a remote location, your PC needs to itself be running the VNC server... (i.e. it's always on, typically listening for connections on tcp port 5900, which qualifies it as a server, and it may even be installed as a service)

And what do you have against dynamic dns? A couple of years ago I used dhs.org for this same purpose, and it worked well.

I actually Use dynamic dns my self (and some times an IP by email)

However there are different ways that people want to use their systems, and if some one ask about ?A?, and ?A? is not a ?bad idea? I usually try to help with what they ask for, rather than telling them to do something else.

Yeah, IP monitor is Nice.

Since I am able to achieve my Goals with all three, and IP monitor is the expensive of the three I did not mention it,

However I am glad it is working for you.
