Oh wow. I can pick any one of those right? Can I be on welfare and live in a trailer park, or do I just have to settle for one of those?

However, my official advice is to SPACE YOUR SH!T OUT in HS. Take as much time as you possibly can with the ladies. Do something special. Find your niche. In my case, it was like this

1) Take programming course
2) Realize that office does some insane sh!t on paper on a daily basis
3) Cut deal with administration to automate that in exchange for free credits.
4) Code. Like mad. For 3 months.
5) Summer vacation
6) Get assigned 2 lovely female data entry assistants.
7) Chill with them for about 2 weeks.
8) Realize that your software isn't done and is due for launch tommorrow.
9) Code like you've never coded before for about 3 weeks.
10) Apologize profusely. Promise this will be the best thing ever to happen to one of the administrators.
11) Don't be lying.

Seriously, I turned the most stone-cold, evil b!tch in the office into an actual usable person.

i wouldn't have wanted to miss out on the social aspects of h.s.

the teachers that really made a difference in my life

and so much else.

i'd say just stick with h.s., load up on as many ap courses as you're comfortable with and enjoy the time there, carefree and lax.

that being said, i went to a private h.s. and had many many excellent teachers, friends whom i had known for the previous 13 yrs and an excellent support system of people whom I could always rely on for direction.

I did a lot of growing up in highschool and I honestly don't think you'll learn what you need to by skipping it or going to a community college which isn't really a nuturing environment.

yes, there are stupid people in highschool, you need to learn to interact with them as it won't change and maybe actually get to know some as I bet you're just making rash generalizations. yes, there are bad teachers ...so challange yourself by learning it on your own or asking for more difficult problems.

Most people I know wish they could go back to highschool, specifically senior year second semester : P, the real world will always be there man, don't rush it.

should i look at technology high schools around here or like classes i can take at community colleges for high school credit, or what? would talking to my guidance counselor help? thanks.

Here's what I did:

Dropped out of high school after failing my freshman year for 70% truancy at 5 different schools in 2 states, "experiment" with man made substances (as many as possible), work at various fastfood establishements while devoting half my income to purchasing QP's (w/o the cheese mind you)and 8 balls on as regular a basis as I could manage, continued this process for another 3 or 4 years, then decided I was a dumbass and went to college starting with remedial education.

In retrospect I probably would've chosen a more direct route to higher education and I suggest you try and do the same.

Shit, I'm there and I'm seriously looking for some way to fail out so I can do it again. Unfortunately, my diploma is in the bag.

Vocational school is not a bad idea, but they get a bad rap, but I know peopel who went there and they got what they went there for. If you are interested in Computers and porgramming, a good vocational school will give some (but little) useful experience. Unfortunately, the best you could do with high school degree is probably some kind of tech support or low level IT work . Vocational school is basiaclly where learn a trade (like being a mechanic).

My advice: just hold out, suck it up, go to college. Meanwhile, do some worth while things that spark your interests. I knwo some community colleges let anyone in high school take classes, so maybe you could take classes that interest you. Also, trust me, you think you can teach this stuff to your self easier (and maybe you could), but having the persistence to do it your self is a whole different story.

It sounds like 1 of three things:
1) You are going to a public high school in Florida ;) (I joke)
2)You to to high school in Lowell, Ma ;) (I joke again)
3)Your high school is struggling to get by on finances and is facing a shortage on good teachers because yoru community keeps talking funds away for school.

Now, if you answered yes to atleast one of those choices, go to a different school.

If you answered yes to 1, then there is just no helping you;)

Get a work study program or something like that if your school offers it, coast through classes, and if you apply yourself, you can probably still get a business started while doing the rest of the stuff.

Don't go to 4 years of High School, that is absolutely your worst option.

If you plan on going to a 4-year college or are unsure if you want to, go to community college as soon as possible. Here in Washington you must be of Junior standing to start going to CC and getting high school/college credits, find out the soonest time you can leave HS in your state.

If you absolute do not plan on going to a 4-year, go to a technical school and pick a trade. For Washington, again, you must be of Junior standing to leave and start technical school. But many of these schools have high school programs themselves, so you can just skip the public school's rules and go straight there. I'm not sure if they'll take a 14 year old but find out the earliest possible time you can go.

If you plan your schooling right it isn't hard to have your bachelor's by age 20. That leaves time for a master's which you could attain in the same time most of those suckers are still finishing off their B.S.

EDIT: I should add that I don't mean you should skip ALL years of high school. Good place to meet girls and plus if you totally skip it, whatever program you enter has a good chance of being filled with morons who dropped out. Personally I did two years then went to CC

No, it's not difficult to do. I started taking classes at the local community college when I was 12. The biggest "problem" was the admission form had fill out bubbles (ala scantron) to put in your DOB & they didn't have an option for 1982. For a couple semesters they thought I was born in 1902.

Community college with transfer to a 4 year school is your best bet, highschool is worthless.

I wouldn't recommend this at all, but to each his own.

High school is when you start interacting on a higher level with other people, and you can't make up for that anywhere else.

(I don't rememebr what else I wanted to write cuz I just realized I wrote this at 7:30 PM and it's now 10:30. I don't even know if this thread is near the top but whatever.)

i'm willing to bet the people who are saying highschool is worthless are the type who were outcasts and/or didn't take advantage of it..i.e. no sports no clubs/extra curric's like community service.

i had plenty of time in highschool to do my work and play sports/persue other interests like amnesty international/community service/photography/chess + time with girlfriend

you're really not gonna have that time in college.

plus in highschool, if you screw up...no worries, only highschool :D you learn.

If you're such a motivated guy which it seems to be, you really shouldn't have any problem making the best out of highschool and having a blast...regardless if your institution is well funded or not.

Sounds like he would do well in a school like CalTech or Harvey Mudd, assuming he has the motivation to do so.

Do what I did. Go to high school, but take as many community college classes you want on the side. They're cheap, but have a wide range of technical courses available. A local university would be good as well, but for example if I were to take courses at UCI, it would've cost a couple hundred per course. You'll be limited to around 3 classes per semester at a max (at least that's how it was over here), but that's still a lot of extra units to get as deep into computers as you want.

I went to an alternative school because I ran into some trouble, and I never regretted it. Those schools are great. All you need to do is show up and you get an A+. I spent most of my time at that school just playing drums in the music room for the day. I also had an unlimited amount of time on the SAT and records show I went to my original school the whole time (not the bs one). Let me tell you about the girls there?.FREAKS. Good luck with whatever you do, things only get better I guess.

I did the high school thing differently too. Public colleges, both community and university, will typically allow you to do something called dual enrollment in which you take college courses for both high school and college credit. Many highschools even teach these on the high school campus.

You could also technically homeschool but do the dual enrollment thing at your local college and satisfy your state's high school requirements. That's what I did; it was a good experience for me.
Good luck whatever you decide

edit>>not to mention I had around 80 college hours by the time I graduated and my university looked upon it favorably.

i agree... I was previously in a school with 7000 students and 35 students in each classroom and i feel your pain.... However, u need to give yourself some more time to decide what you want to ... Your interests will change!

I was sure that i wanted to do computer engineering.. However, after having researched more into what i would be learning and as time passed , i decided against it and now im pretty sure that i'd want to do Mechanical engineering..... I'd suggest that you stick to your current high school and take computer courses at a CC side by side..

I just trudged through the 4 years of high school bullshit and kept self-teaching myself everything there was to know about IT in the mean time. And I still don't know everything :p

But unless you think you can be super-productive (make money AND earn college credit AND continue to learn all at the same time) then dropping high school might work.
