Alternatives to DSL, Cable and Satellite?

Where I live, I cannot get Cable or DSL and Satellite internet is quite simply, retarded. (I could put up with the relatively low speed and the massive latency but the bandwidth cap, price and reliability are major deal breakers.) Are there any alternatives? Preferably around/under $50/month.

Could be more than $50 but there are wireless alternatives. Either through your cell phone provider like AT&T or Verizon, or through companies like Ricochet.

EDIT: Looks like Ricochet is gone, not sure if there are others like it so maybe if 4G is in your area or faster 3G, the cell phone company is an option.

Clearwire is under $50 a month. I had decent results with it when I used it for 3 months. You need at least 3g on sprints network to have access though.

why would you want internet in the mountains of malaysia?

Most smart phones can be used as a modem. My wifes droid has a some kind of program that she bought for $9.

Installed the program on the laptop, and now the laptop can use the unlimited internet of the phone.

I remember seeing a regular cell phone used as an external modem back around 2002 or 2003. The guy was getting 128kb up and down.

~~ EDIT ~~

My wife uses a program called Easy Tether to connect her droid to her laptop.

I'm in PA too & have the same problem. I was actually informed the other day by one of my neighbors that that called about getting satellite(not sure which company) & were told our area is too saturated & they aren't allowing any more in the area 😕

The electric co-op i belong to looked into broadband over power lines but dropped that saying there are too many other options out there for people.

I tried wireless but i'm too far away from the nearest tower to get a consistent, decent signal. Plus they wanted $60/month.

But hey, all should be good within 4 years 🙄

Hastening the deployment of high-speed broadband services before the
2015 deadline established under the original Chapter 30. In some rural
areas, broadband will be universally available by the end of 2008.

I just checked Clearwire and they don't have anything in my zip code. THOSE FUCKERS.
So now it seems that if I want anything faster than the shit I have now, I'll have to pay Verizon (only carrier that works here, no 3G) a boatload of cash every month for a severely bandwidth-capped service. I can't wait until I'm 18 and I move out.

PDANet I bet.

I sent my wife an email asking her the name of the program. When she sends me something back I'll post it.

EDIT - Its called "easy tether"

Depending on how strong the cell phone signal is, we can watch streaming video with no problems. Its great when we go to the deer camp and want to get on the net.

Who is your carrier? I thought all the wireless plans got rid of their unlimited data plans?

Verizon- http://www.pcworld.com/article/228256/verizon_say_so_long_to_unlimited_data.html
ATT- http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytech_gadg/20100602/tc_ytech_gadg/ytech_gadg_tc2354
Sprint/nextel - http://www.intomobile.com/2008/05/2...a-actually-means-5gb-worth-of-unlimited-data/

general op article on the issue http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...ong_can_Verizon_Sprint_offer_unlimited_plans_

Tmobile still has an unlimited data that is really unlimited, but they are selling to ATT, so after that is complete, where does it go?
