Has anyone here ever successfully been able to secure a grant from the government, or otherwise found some effective way to get money to apply toward the purchase of a home? I'm looking for ways to make getting a home more affordable. I'm sick of living in an apartment. At least with a house, I will be building equity with my payments each month.

I did this nice little deal with the Feds:
1. For each month I was a full time student I received a payment from the Federal Government. I was able to collect this money monthly up to 45 months.
2. When I wanted to buy a house I used a Federal program that guarantees my mortgage loan which meant I did not have to have a downpayment.
Option one is no longer offered by the Feds but option 2 is still there. The cost to me was 4 years of my life from age 18 to age 22 which was the time I spent in the Navy.

Eric, how do you know you don't qualify already? What's your income and credit history?
