Alternative to Windows Live Messenger

I actually really liked the WLM client. I loved how it also remembered my chat window position on monitor #2.

I tried Skype. It seems IM is just an afterthought on it. It's actually quite ugly, although it does remember my chat window position on monitor #2.

I also tried Google Talk using their client. It's as simple as WLM and looks very similar, but it doesn't remember my chat window position. It always opens adjacent to the "buddy list". Although it's not a big deal, remembering the chat window position was a nice luxury in WLM that I'd like to keep.

Yahoo IM - it was popular years back, but seems a bit too bloaty and blingy. It makes me think of when people would pimp out their pages on MySpace. It didn't remember my chat window position either, so I'd rather use the much simpler Google Talk client than this.

Any other suggestions?

Something else I can't seem to find in a Google search - will WLM's Facebook connector still work after Messenger is shut down, or does it go through Microsoft servers? If I can keep using WLM and just connect using the FB chat protocol, I have no problem with that.

I used MSN a lot and hated Skype ie bloated and high memory usage etc..now I use Trillian which is a good replacement for MSN,light weight too.

Trillian also has the nice popup message for when you get new mail like MSN has, shame Skype does not have that.

Thanks, I tried both Trillian and Miranda. Both will remember my chat window position. Trillian was a bit more user-friendly and intuitive. The wife and I also preferred its UI, so that's what we will go with.

Jitsi is by far the best, open source, no external logins, supports most instant messaging protocols, even fir video as well as sip!

It's updated regularly too.

What I liked most about WLM is the ability to drag and drop pictures directly from the internet and view them with your contact immediately. Is there another IM client that does this? I know there are some programs that claim to do drag and drop, but you have to save the pictures to your computer first and then drag and drop into the conversation window which is a hassle, especially for pictures you don't plan on keeping anyway.
