Alternative to the programing forum idea

You just gave me an idea. Merge software with operating systems, then create a programming section. Then you could eliminate technical support, and allow people to ask for help in the related sections (this is what happens now anyways). With the open slot they could create the photography forum that people have been begging for.

Hmm, not bad!

I sometimes wonder whether to direct someone to Software or OS when they ask about something like image backups of their OS in General Hardware, this removes the ambiguity.

Software's too broad as is. If you gave Games and Programming their own forums, then you could merge Software and Operating Systems (although I still think they should all be separate). But just tossing OS into "Software, Programming, and Games" would be a disaster.

Thats exactly what he was saying? It would be OS & Software, Games, Programing, then you could add a photography section?

I just wish we could fit a digital imaging forum in somewhere.

This would fit nicely into the waste of space that Peripherals takes up at the moment.

Yes, those questions mostly end up in General Hardware now anyway.

Software combined with operating systems doesn't seem like a great idea to me. I go into OS to see mostly interesting unix-related (as rare as it is) stuff. The rest is just windows stuff which is so completely different in approach and not interesting to me. If OS and software were combined, the interesting OS threads would be diluted even more. Ideally there would be a "unix and programming" forum and a "windows and software" forum, but obviously that won't happen.

I think we should just have:

OS
Software
Games
Programming & Development

I agree. OS generates more traffic than programming does so it would create the same problems that we have with programming lumped with software and games. But without a doubt, it would make sense to eliminate the underused categories like peripherals and technical support as these posts just end up in the other forums anyways. Like, if someone's having trouble with their video card and a certain game they're sure not going to Technical Support, not enough peeps read would read it. They'd go to Video, GenHardware and also SoftwareApps&Games.

The forum layout here is outdated by five years or so. They need to get with the times or else they risk losing a substantial percentage of their user base (and readership).
