I'm a member of what is currently called the "Steering Committee", for a biennial symposium (PLUS). As we have now been around for three years (2003-2005), some of our group feels that the term "Steering Committee" is no longer applicable, as that implies that we are initally guiding the company through start-up. The definition doesn't exactly say that, but I can see their logic. So, we're in search of an alternate name.
"Executive Commitee" has already been suggested... was rejected by our President (and others) as being too elitist. That said, I think that it is the most applicable to our group, as it implies that we are all executives (have power of authority)... or at least it implies that to me, and some other people I've talked to about the issue.
I thought about "advisory board"... def: a board appointed to advise the chief administrator. Not exactly applicable, as everybody on the Steering Committee has power of authority (and of course the President has overriding power, but exercises that only in extremely exceptional circumstances).
"Board of Directors" implies that we set policy for a company, and usually a board of directors does not participate in day-to-day operation, but the Steering Committee does participate in day-to-day work, and we are not the board of directors for our parent company.
Any more suggestions?
