Alternative to @Home cable software?

I will be getting cable internet soon and I have read somewhere that the @Home software should not be installed. What exactly is in this software and do I need it? Is there an alternative? Thanks and please forgive my ignorance.

You dont need those software.... I uninstall it immediately... it's a bunch of useless programs (like scheduler, TV guide, etc...), you dont need the software to use cable....

I agree the @home software is horrible. Especially their browser for 2.0
I got rid of it immediately. All you have to do is under network identification type your computer name and under workgroup type @Home. Then it will work fine.

Just forget the @Home software. Everything should be handled through DHCP automatically by your OS.

Don't let the installers install the @home software. They just mark their sheet as 'customer self-install'

Just plug the modem into the NIC and let DHCP take over. Remove any auto dial settings from IE...
