The Hercules and the Philip's are both based on the same crystal chipset. It all depends on what you are using them for. For gaming I recommend the Hercules GTXP, for recording mp3, or other sound editing etc I recommend the philip.

Is that the Philips Acoustic Edge you are referring to when you say "the philip"? Just curious...

What about Win2k drivers for each of those... It used to be an issue, so I've held off... but I really want to replace my onboard sound for Christmas!

My bad..
I meant.. among sound cards that are 'not" made by creative, hercules or philips.
The reason is that Hercules and philips cards are over priced and I got 686B southbridge, so i want to stay away from Live! cards..not to mention Audigy which is just out of my reach.

cmedia or yamaha chipset.
You can also try Aureal though driver support is an issue and it also had issues with the via chipset.
You will be better of getting sis 735 motherboard.

How is terratec xfire 1024? It's got same DSP (Cirrus/Crystal CS4624) as hercules fortissimo II.
