Alternative backlighting LCD?

Story later on, details first:

I am hoping to build or simply learn from other's mistakes as I do not want to dump a few grand into a project with no or limited success. I have a few LCDs (recent 4ms/6ms 17" LCDs and a single 19" LCD) that I'ld be willing to use as my guinea pigs for this project. I am hoping to replace these horrible backlights (I loathe whoever came up with the concept to use fluorecent backlighting, let alone any fluorescent lighting in any form or fashion) with some reasonably stable light source. I have excellent vision in terms of focal and color ranges however I cannot tollerate unstable light sources for the considerable amount of time I have to spend infront of these screens.

I am hoping to rip out the backlighting, and create something similar to a CRT housing with a light, some diffuser panel, and perhaps a lens if necessary to distribute the light evenly. I hope to have it passively cooled, and so far the easiest would probably be incandescent lighting. given a reasonably short focal length so it would be desk worthy (~ 14-20" in addition to the current 4" depth including base of an LCD), it may be rather difficult. Has anyone had any experiences with such projects or know anyone who has in the past? Google, newsgroups, etc have not been all that helpful.

I have been a fairly long user of computers both professionally and as an enthusiast. Throughout all of my experiences I have never been impressed by displays, notably low refresh rates, resolutions, backlighting, focusing issues, etc. I have never delved into graphics beyond the typical necessities for web (some photoshop, fireworks, nothing too fancy however). Most of my work is in light coding/scripting, server administration, and typical spreadsheet/database/documentation. Yes, I end up staring at text a huge portion of my day. I do perform the "eye" exercises regularly such as full motion range, focusing at a distance at regular intervals, blinking when possible, and sometimes use artificial tears as well. Fluorescents are the spawn of the devil.

I agree fluorescent is generally an awful light source but in conjunction with LCD it is still preferable to CRT where the flickering and resulting eyestrain is undeniable. Fluorsecent is more energy efficient than incandecent but of course contains hazardous materials. Enter LED... with the best combination of efficiency, colour reproduction and environmental impact. The costs are still relatively high but the transition seems inevitable. As for a DIY project it would probably be impractical and even more costly than just buying an available FPD or waiting a bit for prices to come down.

If you are going to use LEDs, you will need to be careful and get the right tint for the light. Most LEDs are not pure white. They usually have tints of purple, green or yellow. Fortunately, LEDs are binned according to their specs (voltage, efficiency, tint). At least one laptop manufacturer is using LED backlight, so it is possible.
