If you are serious about multimedia speakers, ditch the Altecs and pony up for some Klipsch Promedia 5.1s. They will set you back US$400, but you will rest assured that you own THE best multimedia speakers. Klipsch brags about their 500 Watts RMS, which is really meaningless when you get down to it, but the fact remains that the bass from the sub's dual 8" coils is tight and fiercely powerful, and the two-way satellites deliver incredibly crisp high frequencies, thanks to the .75" tweeter on each sat. The max volume is louder than any human being can tolerate, and they fill a room with beautiful sound. Some people complain that the bass is 'boomy' and the highs 'too sharp', but you can tweak the controls so easily either in software or on the control pod that they can sound however you want them to. The Altecs are OK, but you are paying alot for what you get (weak sub, only 2 tweeters). The Klipschs are all about sound quality and useful features, without wasting time on 'frills' like Altec does (USB speaker control software....blah). The Klipsch Promedia 4.1s will get you a similar setup, minus the center channel, and with a smaller sub for $299. They might be a better fit for your budget. I have owned various Altec Lansing speakers, but after I got my Klipsch 5.1s, the Altecs sound pathetic.
