Altec Lansing ACS33 - how to crank down the bass?

I bought these for a laptop in my bedroom. The problem is that these speakers are far too bassy!

I just have to turn them on and turn the volume knob like a millionth of a millimeter, and the sub starts jumping around the room... (well, you know what I mean) Perhaps I'm being dumb, but I can't find a sub volume control on these units.

Is there a way to adjust the bass on the sub with this unit?
Because even compared to my powerful gaming speakers, these just ramp up far too much for a minimal volume control increase.

Is there a volume setting/bass setting on the sub itself? Also you could try through your soundcard properties.

No settings on the sub itself - the only control on this speaker set is on one of the satellites.

I'm not exactly joking about the millionth of millimeter - the volume control is too loud at about 3mm of volume knob movement (and it's a 270-degree spinning knob about an inch in diameter!).

The laptop has your standard soundcard properties but no bass/treble controls.

I've tried hooking up other equipment (portable CD, MD) and it's a wall of bass occluding everything else!

Help...

tape some quarters to the woofer cone

it will weigh the woofer down and the amp will not be able to make it move in and out as easy

yes this will change the characteristics of how the woofer behaves in the box, but it will lower the volume of bass at low levels

or find some kind of bass attenuation device - either on your existing speakers or something you can put on the signal line

I have these speakers and the is no way, except to open up volume control and lower the bass through software. These are impressive speakers for such a cheap price.

Thankfully, not everyone is obsessed with drowning out their music with bass. :p

I agree. You should had bought some different speakers then. Some 'el-cheapos' for $20.

But if you want a serious answear you can turn down the bass in the software your sound card came with. If you got the SB live! like I do, go into the 'MIXER' (double-click on HQ Icon in control panel) and in there you will have a choice of regulating your trebles and bass. Turn bass down all the way.
