Don?t ever buy these speakers (EVER).

I bought them in December 2001, the subwoofer packed up in June 2002, under the warrantee I had to pay to ship these 30kg speakers interstate back to the supplier. (Not cheap)
These where replaced with a new set. OK fair enough.

Well it?s December 2002, still under warrantee and the subwoofer packs up yet again. This isn't bad luck this is a defective product.

I wouldn't mine if I gave these things a hammering but the volume control is rarely past the first setting.

I think you have an isolated case. That's the first I've heard of anyone having a problem with the 641's. I've had mine for over a year, and beat the living shiet out of them almost every day. They're still working like new. I often have mine turned up to the 4/5 setting - which equates to ~107db SPL in my chair. Which is damn loud!

If you guys had to buy today what would you get for 4.1:
Klipsch Promedia 4.1 or
Altec Lansing 641
I feel like upgrading my generic crap.

Don't know whats up with your subs blowing out.
Mines fine and it gets CRANKED from time to time (although normally set between 2 and 3).
Sorry to hear you've been soured by IMO great speakers. I cant complain about my 641.

I would get the 641's. The Promedia's are nice but they sound too shrill for my tastes.

I've been wanting the 641's for a while now. I just don't have the money, but when I do have the money I'll be getting them.... unless something more appealing shows up by then.

I've hade connection problems with 3 different Altec speaker and sub combos, where the rear connector to the sub would come loose from its imternal connection. I myself don't feel these speakers are the best in terms longevity either.

I have 5 sets of Altecs and never had a problem with any of them. 2 ACS295's, ACS345, ATP3, and the 641's. The oldest are at least 5 years old (the 295's) and the newest are the 641's (about 1 year). Seem like quality stuff to me...
