Alt Tabbing in SC

I have been playing Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow a lot recently, the trouble is that when I alt tab to check AIM or any other program SC freezes on my screen. I try to bring up the task manager but that doesn't come up either. I know it isn't a problem with my hardware but does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

I'll post my specs just in case.

1gig pc-3200 RAM
Leadtek 6600GT
Barton 2500+

dont alt tab? even for me there are some games that screw up on me when i switch back and forth, easiest way to solve it is to not do it.
