ALT+TAB IN GAMES with voodoo5 5500 = CRASHES COMP (anyone else have this prob?)

I have the latest drivers. This happens in UT and quake3 so far, it pisses me off big time. Anyone else have this prob or know how to fix it?

THEN DON'T DO IT! Why would you need to press Alt-Tab anywaz?

You press alt and tab to switch apps when you are playing a game like q2 or something of that nature. 3dfx cards just won't do it, default open Gl will do it. But it is something about the 3dfx chips that won't let you alt and tab, its been like this since voodoo 1.

I would guess you have a configuration problem or something. Have you searched at 3dfxgamers.com or emailed tech support to see if it's a known issue?

I can alt-tab in and out of games all day long.

No problems with my V5, nor did I have any with my V3. Don't be so quick to blame your V5.

Well there is no need to be hostile ppl, the samething that has been happening to him it has happen to me numerous times and it happens on my friends computers when playing q2 with there v2's, so obiviously it must be something up with 3dfx card, right? If you know something to help us out then post some sort of errr remedy up.

I wasn't really impressed with the V5 5500 in the first place, except the FSAA but the frame rates really drop with that. This ALT-TAB thing just tipped me off. I like checking my icq msgs during games.

mpeg, that's odd that it doesn't work. That's exactly what I use ALT-TAB for... to check my ICQ messages during a game.

Even still... for UT, you don't have to ALT-TAB. Just hit ESC, then minimize the window. (And for Q3... well, Q3 sucks anyway. :Q)

I'm able to ALT-TAB fine with my V5 5500; that's with both the original and the new drivers.

As to why I would want to in the first place, it's a godsend in Diablo II. I would hate to have to quit to check email then have to clear the entire billion miles of Act III jungles again (and again)

See the thing that happens to me is that i try to check icq and i lock up in q2 every single time and i have to ctrl alt del and shut q2 down and start it again, forcing me to lose frags in a match. Does someone know how to fix this?

I have never had a problem using Alt-Tab with my V1 or V3. In fact, up until a few months ago I hated that damn Windows key. I kept accidentally hitting it and I would be jumped to the start menu everytime.

doh! just tried doing an alt-tab out of Q3, and yes the system locked up. but who cares? no need for alt-tabbing while you're playing a game.

oh, and the FSAA hit isn't at all that bad. I play CS online in 1024x768 with 2xFSAA, it looks great, and it's still 40+ fps everywhere. Not even a smoke grenade gets me below 30 fps it seems. And 4xFSAA @ 1024x768x16 looks great in Thief 2 and it's fully playable rocks....

Lets get this resolved. I don't play Q3, but does everyone that has a v5 have problems alt-tabing out of q3? Are you using a mini-gl or the icd?

First off, i know what Alt-Tab does, but i just don't see the great need for it.

Checking ICQ messages? If you are playing on the internet, you either put it on N/A or you turn it off completley to lessen the lag.

The only time i have done it is in HALF LIFE and that's to boost the gamma on my vid card via display properties

I use it for ICQ, when I'm meeting up with someone.
"I'll be in a game, ICQ me when you get ready and we'll hook up."

And there's even been more than a few times where the email that I've been expecting is more important than the game I'm in.

i see your problem. you're not concentrating enough on the game to forget about email, icq, the rest of the world, etc..
