Also, even though you are using an S-Video lead ensure the input type is set to 'Composite' in your software/driver

Not sure where you would set this.
My tv only has RCA in.

I think he meant set it in the video card software, not on the tv.

The card might have an option for selecting the type of tv-out and that might change the signal it sends through the pins so the adapter can use it.

Well, I think I may have figured it out.

The S-Video to RCA adapter I have has 4 pins and a plastic piece (on the s-video side)

When I look at the X300SE it has 7 pins.

I am guessing I need a 7-pin S-Video to RCA adapter.

Any thoughts? Experience?

Thanks,
Travis

Is the adapter you're using the one that came with the card?

If it's not, that might be the problem.

EDIT: I was looking through ATI's accessory products and it looks like you're going to have to find one that's specifically compatable with your model if you don't have the one that came with your card.

It looks like they have several versions of connections that all look like "s-video". If you're using one that wasn't designed for your card that could explain why it's not working. I would suggest contacting ATI customer support and asking them what the exact part it is that you need to get it to fit into your X300 and work.

I had black and white with my tv out before and i fixed it by getting a better cable. if it didnt work i would have just returned the stupid cord.

the sockets usually get dirty as most svideo ports dont come with a cover and they get all kinds of dirt and crap in them...

Were you using a S-video to RCA adapter?

in fact yes/no my card came with a dongle. it has RCA/svideo in and outs. Kind of dumb how they made the port that it plugs into a similar shape and size of an svideo port.

Bought the card from someone on FS/FT and it came with no adapter.
Bought an adapter from someone else on FS/FT.

It seems like it's a 4 pin vs 7 pin problem then.

Maybe you could e-mail or call the guys at that s-video store with your card info. From all the info on their different connectors, it seems like they're quite the authority for problems like this.

EDIT: I e-mailed them to see what they have to say. I'll post the results when they e-mail back.

Thanks a lot for the help.
In the meantime I may just purchase a standard 7-pin to RCA adapter.

I sent them this:

"Hi guys.

A friend of mine got a 128MB 64-bit X300SE out of a dell computer and
it didn't come with an adapter to do composite out.

He told me there is a 7 hole plug in the back of the card.

He just needs composite output from that because he doesn't have
s-video on his tv.

Is one of these what he needs?

Thanks a lot."

Reply was this:

"The 7-pin to rca will do the trick.

Regards,

Jose"

Hey travlen, I've been having the same exact problem with the dell i got. Did that 7-pin s-video converter solve the problem?

So you have a 7 pin card and a 4 pin s-video converter too?

I'm interested to see how the OP problem turned out too.
