it got its name from most people using small thin wire to do so. on certain processors you can connect some of the pins in an organized fashion and it will effectively "unlock" the processor. it can be risky if you don't know what your doing though.
You don't need to use any wire tricks on Mobile Athlon XP's... they're already completely multiplier unlocked. So if you have a mobile... have no fear If you don't... then just look at the stepping to see when it was manufactured... anything after week 32 of last year (0332) is probably locked... anything after week 40 (0340) is definately locked.
True, but some boards won't allow for the multiplier adjustment over 12.5x. On those boards, the pinmod would need to be done. I could see this mainly geared to those with old VIA KT333 and 266 chipsets that have no agp/pci lock and can't hit 200fsb. So, you would run 166x16, for example.
