I really want this !

How much? Monthly charge? Can you record off DirecTV? Can you record and watch something else?

On the main site it appears to be either $250 for 40g or $350 for 80g

12.95 per month or one time $300 charge for subscription.

$300 pays off more if you use it for > 23 months.

Spooner isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.

So with TiVo you can't just program in a time to record like a VCR and avoid a subscription fee?

I believe older units could do this but this has since been disabled. My guess is they are taking a loss on the actual units so they have to force you to get the service. Like a cell phone or something.

Greatest...invention...EVER!

I love my Tivo.

If you split the cable before your cable box, you can watch basic cable while recording. If you have a DirecTivo unit, you can watch any channel while you record another, from what I hear. Of course, you can always watch something you've previously recorded while recording something else.

It's really difficult to explain why it's so great. You really have to play with it for awhile to appreciate it.

you can get a season pass for a show, then it records it anytime it comes on. you can get a wish list for a show then it will record it no matter what time, or channel it is on. Tivo will record shows it thinks you may like. Tivo is just so much beter than a VCR its not even funny. i havn't watched a live program since i first got a tivo over 2 years ago. you know the feeling of nothing being on TV? well i don't. thats what tivo is about.

If you have DirecTV I stongly suggest getting a Series 2 Directivo receiver such as the new Hughes model. It comes with 35hrs of storage and can be easily upgraded to more.

Advantages:
- stores the data in the raw satellite signal meaning no loss of quality
- Directv only charges $4.99 a month for the Tivo service.
- Multi-tuner - watch one program while recording another (requires two cables coming in from dish)

Drawback:
- doesn't work without Directv

TiVo is the absolute best PVR available. I have 3 of them, all with over 200 hours of record time. :) You can watch TV at your convenience !!

No the Dish Network brand is the best. I have 2 of them and really enjoy both of them except when my wife is recording her soap operas and killing my viewing time.

What's the perfect hard drive to put into a PVR?

I want to ensure 100% compatibility, something reliable and QUIET.

I have an original ReplayTV 3060 (no fees :D ) and want to put this $84 Maxtor 120GB inside of it, good idea or bad idea?

RossMAN, your link didn't work for me... But I have several Maxtor 120 gig 7200 rpm hard drives in my TiVo's, and they run fine. Some people have said 5400 rpm drives run cooler, but my temps are the same either way.

Thanks, here is the correct link.

The ReplayTV is in our bedroom which is in the basement, so it's usually at least 5-10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house.

How difficult and how long was the install?

Do you have both the new and original hard drives?
