OK so the use:

Storing and editing pictures (no video) and everything else in general like email, internet, makings DVD's and CD's no games, no hardcore stuff - this PC will never be overclocked

the only thing she is keeping is probly just the case which is an Antec - its huge and has lots of space and drive bays

budget is an issue but she wants it to last

i am thinking E8400, 2 to 4 GB ram (she will use XP32b) and a 500GB seagate 7200.11 drive, what else ? i am not sure

What mobo is good ? should i get her the same one i got (in sig) ? no raid nothing fancy shmancy

Thanks for the suggestions if there will be any

EDIT i am an INTEL fanboy so only intel plz and i dont think she needs a quad core, ( heck i game crysis on a Core 2 duo and it plays great so she will be fine)

she NEVER upgrades so this one has to last, what she has now is embarrassing (1.5GHz AMD with 1x256MB + 2 x128MB ram and a 40GB HDD with a 64MB GeForce card )

The P43 chipset is out, gigabyte has one for $100. With the E8400 and 4 GB that will be ~$400, plus a video card ($50) and the HD.

That should be future-proof in case you do update her to Vista later.

dell ? no way - i think its cheaper for me to build something for her .... plus dell PCs come with monitors and useless printers - she has an lcd already and one of the best printers and scanners .....

why does she need a video card ? just to off load as much as possible from the cpu and save some ram space ?i think its a good idea, but whats the best option ? future proofing for vista is also a good idea and vista requires a 512 MB card right > ?

I would go with this Gigabyte (GA-73PVM-S2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7100) along with your choice of RAM and CPU (any dual core is going to be fine).

+ E8400 + 2GB mem.

You can always add Video card and more mem.

I do not think more than 2 MB and a fancy Video card it would make any difference for a use as indicated on the OP.

Future proof is a ridiculous notion for general use either.

Future proof mean spend a lot more now so you would have spend more in the future.

Future proof means nothing in technology advancing field like computers.

The only place that Future proof really counts is in Human food consumption. Less Junk food and Alcohol means longer Future.

mac+decent external drive for time machine ftw.
forget about building her a pc. she needs convenience and automated backup of a mac.

you forget warranty. if you build it yourself who gets called to fix it every time theres some kind of little problem 😛

at least with a dell or hp etc they can handle the problems for you

also vista can run ok with integrated graphics. see laptops as an example

Hahahaha i love the responses ....!!!!

i dont mind helping her if any problems arise, and i rather get some simple video card for vista for the future than have problems or whatever in the future...basically does anyone know of any good stuff thats going down in price right now ?

You said "budget is an issue but she wants it to last"

I think you are spending too much of her money for what you want, not what will be most beneficial to her.

A P43 mobo and an e2200 with 4Gb of ram, a couple hard drives and a base video card. 'nuf said.

And because you are an Intel Fanboy does not mean that an AMD 780g rig should not be spec'ed - especially now that the Sideport versions are rolling out.

You're wrong.
Order her a Dell and move on to your next odyssey.

"Simple video cards" are already built into modern chipsets. In terms of a vista experience an added video card won't net you anything.

You can get her a new Dell for $259.

Max out the ram from your favorite online seller and buy a copy of XP if needed. That is more than enough for any non-gamer.

-it seems you have everything in your sig ,that you said she needs, sell her yours, or parts of , then up grade.

gamers always assume that non techies should have their type of gear😛
just get her a dell or mac. cheaper is short sighted because you can trouble shoot your own pc, and tolerate any problems when non techies would be driven up the wall. osx and the ilife type software will probably make her happier once she learns ot use it than any gee wiz pc you slap together.

I'll second the mac recommendation. It's an Intel, so your good there. It includes the software she needs to do all of her work, so no dealing with pirated versions of anything. Get apple care and your pretty much set on not having to do tech support for 3 years. (Applecare's great. They've replaced anything I've turned in. Drops, lightning strikes, flood dmg. <3 )

Having moved most of my extended friends and family to a mac, most find it easier to use. Sure they bitch about it for the first month, but after that it's nothing but yay's for switching. Don't forget the value of not having to uninstall a bunch of random crapware and rooting out viruses and spyware every time you come over.

(I still run vista on non apple hardware, so I'm not /that/ much of a fanboy)

Don't forget to provide her with a means and instructions for backing up important data (photos, music, maybe email). It's always sad to get calls from folks that have lost years worth of family photos from a hard drive crash.

The core items in my system should cover that with room to spare:

ASRock ALive NF6G-VSTA
Any cheap AMD CPU - I've got a single core 4000 on it right now but the Egg had a dual core 4200 OEM at $40. recently and the 4600 retail box at $53.
2 GB of Corsair XMS to match (catch 'em on sale or rebate often). Anything over 3GB is wasted on 32-bit XP.
One whatever size drive suits for in the box and another in an external eSATA enclosure for backup. I've been using Hitachi with good results.
I like to have two burners - they're cheap. Eschew the Lightscribe fad. Pioneer is almost always a safe bet. Samsung are decent too. And Asus burners are based on the Pioneer.

.bh.

Try the Intel DG35EC MB. It has the X35 Integrated video and HD Audio. 1.8v RAM Only. It does not work with IDE Hard Drives and DVD drives. If you use all SATA drives it will work great. I put a E7200 in mine. Runs Vista Real fast.
