Alright, so I finally got my Suse Linux package from the hot deal.

I got it installed and everything is working fine, but now I want to see if I can get it connected to the net. First off, I am using dialup, and a winmodem at that. Its a PcTel, but Suse did recognize it and I think it is setup correctly. I am using MSN as a service provider, what info do I need to get connected? I have my username and password, as well as dialup number, do I need anything else? Also I currently have to type MSN/ before my username, will I also have to do this in Suse? Any help is appreciated, thanks

No that should be it. You'd just need your dns server addresses maybe and your pop3 and smtp server addresses for setting up e-mail and that should be that.

If you want you can log in manually using minicom if you run into any difficulties, which is interesting.

In "real" hardware based modems they were little computers and you'd talk to them by doing stuff like
adtd 402681312
for instance would have it dial out. Of course your modem is emulated in software, but it should pretty much do the same thing.

Once I found a diagnostic-something shell for technicians by using minicom to diagnose a bad line, I could log into the dial up server and everything. Of course couldn't do much. You can do the same thing with hyperterminal in Windows.

But the hard part is getting your modem to work if your using a winmodem, after that it's a breeze, or should be.

Interesting. I want to see how this works out.

I tried to get onto MSN like I used to with "normal" ISPs in Windows XP. I could dial, connect and put in my name and the password, but it would always fail authoriization, and disconnect. I found no informantion on MSN about gettting straight through without thier software, or how to connect using linux. Since this procedure failed in XP, I didn't think there was any way to make it work in Linux. I'd love to dump the MSN Explorer garbarge, and getting hooked to MSN with linux would be a thrill. 🙂

MSN does have software for MacOS though.

Ooops, I forgot about this thread. Have been playing in linux a lot lately, but have yet to get her on the net. Can anyone tell me if Suse 9.1 Pro(I think)will work with a Pctel winmodem out of the box, or do I need to find the driver or whatever? Like I said, suse knows I have a Pctel modem, that much I can tell. But yet when I go to the modem options or whatever that is, and select a modem(well not actually the modem, but kind alike the modem location, I am sure linux users know what I am talking about, at least hopefully) and then query it, none of them respond. SO does that mean it is not setup correctly?
