Huang (Chinese)
Hoang (Vietnamese)

What I've always thought, having grown up in California, was that they were "Wong" and "Hwang," respectively, but now I'm being told I'm wrong...by Oklahomans :Q

Back home I had two very good friends named Huang and dated a girl named Hoang...can someone clear this up for me?

I'd pronounce them "Hwang" and "Ho-ung" respectively.

But I'm not Chinese, so take it FWIW

well it depends... if huang is the chinese word for yellow, a lot of people spell huang as wong, which is probably why some people told you it should be pronounced that way. but huang is the correct pronunciation, not wong.
