Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring one of the most endearingly screwed-up families in contemporary fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to dominate our lives, about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people, and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

Equal parts philosophical quest and screwball comedy, Infinite Jest bends every rule of fiction without sacrificing for a moment its own entertainment value. It is an exuberant, uniquely American exploration of the passions that make us human - and one of those rare books that renew the idea of what a novel can do.

This book is amazing. A fellow ATOT'er told me to read it and it was the best book recommendation I have ever gotten.

It used to be $20ish, and now for the 10th anniversary, it's selling for $10 or less. BUY IT! READ IT!

You should start. There are many things that can be conveyed through the medium that could never be conveyed through non-fiction.

Neither do I - anymore. I used to read a lot of it, but after I went to university and started reading scientific papers, textbooks, etc every day, now I can't read anything else. Even my casual reading is popular science. Like right now I've got The Quark and the Jaguar by Murray Gell-Mann and the latest New Scientist magazine sitting upstairs.

I'm the same. Used to read lots of popular fiction (Stephen King, Dan Brown etc) but now read exclusively non-fiction. There are only a finite number of books you can read in a lifetime and I'd like to make sure I'm learning as much as possible while I'm reading.

I considered picking up The Quark and the Jaguar but I read some appalling reviews, are you enjoying it?
