Ok.. this was my first Linux install and it went really smoothly.

A few problems...

1). It didn't detect my NIC first boot. Fine. I ran the setup wizard and it force fed it some strange driver, it was registering it as a 3c590 10BaseT [Vortex]. I don't know what the means, but WinXP says its a 3com Etherlink III, and I agree. :)

2). When the computer labours, which it shouldn't.. I actually had it get a little laggy once or twice, but seemed fine after a reboot.. anyway, when the computer lagged, (laboured) it knocked my USB mouse out.. completely stops working, but everything else is still functional. It is registered as a Microsoft Explorer USB mouse under the device manager.

TIA,
Phuz

I don't see any problems with what you've described:

1) That is the family name of the NIC/chipset, not just the marketing name. Mandrake installed the correct driver. See this page for more information.

2) There are a number of reasons that the computer lagged, but that doesn't indicate a problem at all. It could have been that a scheduled task was being done in the background (eg, log rotate), at it's scheduled time. Next time this happens, look at your running processes (using ksysguard, gnome-system-monitor, or top, among others) to see what process is using the most CPU/MEM%. That should help you determine if there is a problem.

< EDIT > Next time your mouse goes out, you don't have to reboot to regain functionality. Simpy press CTRL + ALT + Backspace and restart your GUI (startx if it doesn't restart automatically). Be sure to close any open, unsaved work or you will lose it. All should be fine again.

Thanks much, AnonymouseUser.

So by all means, I should be able to connect? Any ideas why not?
I used the DrakeConnect setup and everything was configured properly. I'm well aware of the necessary network settings, but I just can't get it online. good to know it has my NIC registered properly, I don't know how to install drivers in Linux yet. :)

I consider the usb being knocked out a definte problem, as it only labours for a few seconds at time. It shouldn't labour at all considering my 2K/XP installations don't. Linux should perform better than Xp, no? When it happens, the light on my mouse goes out, meaning the USB isn't likely getting power???

Thanks again,

Phuz

Ok. CTRL/ALT/BACKSPACE didn't bring my mouse back.. this time, the light stayed on but the mouse wasn't useable. It froze as soon as it started to 'detect' hardware...

edit: wondering if i should just reinstall...?

Is your NIC activated? Can you ping your ISP or retrieve mail from your ISP? If so, then it might be your DNS settings.

The power going out is definitely a problem. What are your system specs? Include mobo (chipset), CPU, memory, graphics card, sound, mouse.

Activated? Its registered in the hardware profile/device manager.. and I can successfully ping 127.0.0.1. I don't know if there is something else I have to do? No internet access at all.. can't ping out...

Anyway, I deleted the partitions and went to reinstall. It froze a number of times through setup... I was selecting what services I want installed and the mouse went out again... i continued the setup with my keyboard.... It made it through the rest of the installation fine but froze while writing my MBR... reboot... can't boot.. Invalid system disk...etc.. GRRR! I tried repairing my MBR, didn't work... I formatted the MBR and made it back into windows.. lucky.

System...

XP 1800+
MSI K7T Turbo-R (not using raid) (KT133A)... I could probably really use a bios update.. hmm.
384mb
WD 80GB SE
Radeon 8500
Santa Cruz (which it didn't recognize, either?)
Microsoft Intelli Mouse
etc... etc..

the 3c509B/etherlink III is a funky card

i assume it is set for PnP, since it wasn't detected properly, i recommend the following

find the DOS utility (3Com website) to manually set the IRQ/mem address for the nic and then boot with a DOS/Win9x boot disk, run the utility and set the irq/mem address (10/300 usually works)

then try to get mandrake to re-detect it as you did before

backup plan: get a PCI NIC

good luck!

I only use mandrake on my dev server so it is configured for that instance. Try using differnet mouse drivers, sometimes that does help. Are you still have connectivity issues with your nic? What is the ip address that you are using?

I have PNP OS turned off in my BIOS, if that matters.
Would manually assigning the IRQ and mem addy mess it up in XP?

Yeah, its a very strange card and I think I need a new one. Occasionally I'll boot into windows and it'll have dropped the drivers on the card.. reboot, and it puts the back in.

Adul: I'm going to try a generic mouse driver, good idea.

Turns out 9.1 has a lot of issues with the install freezing.. it has to do with the recent kernels and framebuffer on machines with a lot of memory and display cards with 64MB or more ram.

Ima try a text only install. :)
