Alright for some this might be a stupid question but considering the major field of profession here...

At the risk of sounding stupid, what is the difference between "dating", "going out", "seeing" a girl, and having a "girlfriend". Is there a sequence here? And how do you differentiate one from the other? Is there some sort of grand mutual decision that must be reached to cross these boundaries, if not how do you know? Geesh you'd think this was rocket science.

in terms of implied committment, i view them as:

girlfriend >> seeing a girl = going out with a girl > dating

dating is just doing stuff... doesn't mean anything. just something to do. going out/seeing is like multiple dates. as in you two like each other enough to want to see each other again. girlfriend is when you two are basically "together". as in you can't date other people.

That sounds right to me.

Dating is just your just going out with them, just testing waters.
You should be able to tell when thats happening...

Seeing/going out with a girl is you've been dating for a while now. Seeing if theres something more, you don't really go for anybody else at the moment.

Girlfriend. I would think you ask, or some kind of commitment (physical or verbal) has been made. Other girls are pretty much off limits.
