That will be a sick rig! You could probably get an Opteron 165 and save a little money, but seriously it looks like you've done your research.

Oh yeah, you may want to see how the stock AMD HS/F that comes with the Opty does for you. It is really nice (has 4 copper heatpipes :Q), and works great for me. You can always get the Tuniq later on if the stock HS/F isn't up to your standards.

Oh yeah I've heard great things about the stock HSF- but I figured it cant hurt to go a notch up since I usually like to OC my rigs to the limit, my favorite was getting my 2.6 P4 up to 3.5Ghz on air- damn that was fun, I didn't have to go above 1.52 V either and it was usually about 55C on load

One thing regarding the RAM. If you're getting the lowest latency XP4000 (3-3-2-8), you will have trouble getting them past the stock 250 (this according to recent reviews). I have the higher latency XP4000 (3-4-3-8), and have no trouble going to 265-270.

Edit: With A64, memory speed beats out timings. This isn't the case with Intel however I believe.

Where did you read this? I read in a review that the lower latency has the same Ocability if not better... and couldn't I just relax the timings anyway?

you have that backwards. Timings are more important with the A64.

I've always thought amd64 is better with speed and not timing since amd64 is bandwith oriented. Well that's what people always said anyway..

Probably wouldn't make a diffrence anyway which one you get, maybe %0.5-%1 in benchies.

It great ram. You have to take what I say with a grain of salt because I like to milk out as much performace for every dollar I put into my system. If you have the money to blow then more power to you. You will get a bit of a boost out of it and will have more flexibility for your system.

So robert what kind of RAM would you recommend for an AMD dual-core system? You said timing is more important. What kind of RAM would you buy (1gbx2) and how much would you overclock it?

I think you should go for the 74GB raptor, or even the 150Gb one. the 36GB raptor had problems, and isnt as fast as the other two. Also, overclocking the system, i would go with the 165 rather than the 170, to save costs yet still achieve the same results.

The only reason I am picking such a small hard drive is because I am putting Windows and all my most commonly used applications on it. The rest can go on the other hard drives. As for problems I read the user reviews on New egg from both hard drives and everyone experienced the same problems- all hard drives have a few defects that ship

A friend of mine with the Tuniq 120 and the same mobo/processor used the 210cfm delta and I ****** you not he reached 3 ghz!!! with an Opteron 170... Now he did use a divider and voltages were pretty high- but it didn't exceed 56 C on load, and I think thats pretty damn impressive despite some people might be concerned about its high temp

After a certain point increasing the airflow will not help temperatures measuably, but if it works...

None of the options you've got there for HD are particulary good. I suppose the raptor 36gb would be the best of the bad bunch.

Am I the only one who thinks he has a poor choice in HDDs? Everything else is fine, but I don't understand what you are trying to do with the HDDs. Can't put any of them in RAID and they are all kind of small.

idk, im retarded with hard drives... I use the other 2 for back up, meaning I just store all my extra stuff on there so if one hd fails I have the other 2. As for the small Raptor- again its just for windows to load fast and for commonly used but small applications- the games can go on the other ones

Thing is that the small (and older) raptors aren't very fast, good 7200 RPM drives are faster than the 36gb raptors. You might well see better performance with the OS on one drive and games on another, but i would much rather the 74gb raptor or a single WD4000KD.

true but honestly... This coming from the old 7200 WD drives... Like, the ones that came out 4 years ago... So for me this Raptor is exciting because anythings an improvement over that dinosaur of a hard drive I have... When I get more money I'll look into high performance hd's
