I think that you should look into some jl subs with an alpine amp. JL just sounds sooo much better than alpine, at least in my experience. Alpine makes better electronics though.

edit: as it is, for a small cabinet, it's prolly alright. It claims to be the same as 2x12s. How much trunk space do you have to mess around with?

it looks really easy to install:
no amp rack needed
small box

but then again, does it sound good?

I think that the smaller woofers used will give increased distortion and less efficiency, although it is using some kind of ported box.
I would go for sealed boxe(s) with two ten-inch or twelve-inch woofers. This will give you the tightest, lowest and best quality bass.
There are many quality woofers out there these days.
If you are handy with tools and math, you should check out madisound.com and parts-express.com, they have what you need without all of the hype (and markup) of the mass market brands.
Get yourself a nice digital bass amp, alpine, mtx, kenwood, etc.
Actually, I have 8's in my small truck, and it rocks plenty loud.

Haha I used to have 4x12s in my station wagon :D pushed too much air and sounded weird unless the back hatch and all windows were open.

yeah the reason I like this so much is because it looks like a 30 minute install job. I also like the fact that it is not too big.

Everyone keeps saying JL is amazing, but I couldnt find a setup that I like (small and easy to install). :-\ But I hear good things about Alpine, at least when it comes to headunits and amps.

if you're looking for easy...then that is one of the options. also look at infinity basslink. I used to have an infinity kappa sub...and i know their subs are good. Now i have a JL 10w7 powered by a Alpine V12 1000W RMS mono amp.

No idea how Alpine subs are

Meh, mid range, overpriced, alright for a small car.

I have the exact same setup you just called for... JL 10w3 and Alpine 350w mono amp and it sounds excellent.

For some reason, I go through a sub like every 1 1/2 years...had an eclipse and also a Punch go bad on me... :( Never did like the sound of the alpine subs...they always sounded tinny to me

Go to Caraudio.com or Caraudioforum.com and ask around. I'm sure they can set you up with something very nice for you budget.

I ended up with a 10" MTX 8500 in a sealed box with ~450w rms. Does what I wanted it to, bump inside but quite on the outside.

*edit*

I will go ahead and say that on a tight budget you will get a good many Alpine Type-R and Ascendant Audio recommendations.

It's good for 500RMS, no?

well, my aforementioned setup was a 640 rms amp and had 4x12 subs (2 mtx and 2 infinity) and cost me a grand total of about $350.

With a package like that you throw a bit of money into the labor / parts for the all in one box. See if there are any of those boxes on ebay or other resale sites, since people often sell dull sounding subs online. If you can't find any it's a good sign. There's also very little room to upgrade the system, good luck finding 7" subs built for that box :).

So yes, for an easy, hassle free setup, thats a good deal. If you want excellent sound quality and future upgradability, check into a 1x10 or 1x12 jl sealed box with alpine amp, you should be able to find a very decent setup for ~$500-$600, and I imagine it would sound a good deal better.

What kind of vehicle is it going into? Are you putting it in a trunk or will it be in the passenger cabin?

I haven't bought them yet and I guess I will not be buying them.

I will look into JL SUB(s) with an Alpine amp.
How much will a place usually charge to install these?

This is going into an X5. It has a DSP sound system which is the "premium" sound. It has 12 speakers and 2 subs (2 8" inch subs). The speakers are nice but the bass is lackinggg. Those baby subs are a joke.

I could just buy a sub box and add the speakers onto it, right?

(assuming u meant building my own box)

Yeah. They're called drivers, not speakers.

Amp + driver + box is basically what you need.
