Alpha PFH6035MFC system won't boot

Hi, I just bought this heatsink plus a sunon fan from a guy. After installing it I couldn't get my system to boot. The diagnosis LED's said it kept randomly hanging at different points in the boot, ie keyboard initialization, ram check etc. I replaced the old stock heatsink and fan and bingo it boots up.

Anyone had any problems with this heatsink? I think it might not be pulling itself down on the cpu tight enough, the stock one has a really really tight spring unlike this alpha...

I'd really like to use it since my cpu temps are 57-59 degrees...

Regarding the Alpha, three things:

  • Is the clip oriented in the correct direction? The bottom of a 6035 has a step in it to provide clearance over the raised solid-plastic end of the CPU socket, and the end of the clip with the stamped, swiveling hook goes at the stepped end of the heatsink so its pressure point coincides with the location of the CPU core.
  • Is the heatsink itself mounted on the CPU socket so the stepped end is, in fact, over the raised solid-plastic end of the CPU socket?
  • Is the clip the strong one that has enough force to compress the AMD cornerpads so the heatsink can touch the CPU core? This clip has two 45° bends in it, while the older, weaker clip has one smooth semicircular arc for a pressure point. The bends make the clip look somewhat like this one, although that one's actually for use with Tualatins that have the heatspreader. But if it looks like one smooth semicircular arc instead of angular, you've got the old weak clip.

Didn't get a chance to check your message till now but yes, it was the clip. I started it up with my hand on the heatsink applying pressure and it worked until the second i let go.

I have the new clip, i took the heatsink apart and tried bending it to make it pull tighter but it didnt work, it still isn't strong enough.

Compared to the stock clip which takes me 5 mins to get off after taking the powersupply out, this thing is f'ing dinky, I can't believe it.
Anyway I talked to the fella i bought it from and he said he had two so i'll maybe switch it or just get my money back.



Also saw a volcano9 hsf forsale for the same price, should I get that instead?
 
If you want my advice, it would be hard to beat the Thermalright SK-6+ at just $9.99, if you have a 60mm fan you can put on it: link It may look slightly less elegant than the PAL6035 but will probably cool even better (no disrespect to the 6035, it's a beauty). Hope that helps! 🙂
