Alpha PAL8045 w/ 80mm Papst fan enough for AXP 1800+?

Hey all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Anyway, that's my question. I'm looking to quiet my computer and I've determined that most of my noise is from my current HSF combination.

I know someone is going to bring up the case airflow question so here's your answer: I've got an Antec 635 mini-tower with a 350 watt PSU. I've also got one 80mm papst fan blowing out and one blowing in (on the hard drive).

Any help would be appreciated. My wife is complaining 'cause she thinks that it's too loud.

Also, I don't do any overclocking nor do I plan on it.

Thanks in advance,
Sam

Yup... an Alpha w/ almost any fan will do fine. YOur temps mighth be a bit high, but as long as it's stable, you'll be alright. Best thing to do is try it first.. and then see. But i have almost no doubt it'll be alright. Look at it this way, my T-Bird 1.4ghz puts out more heat than any AMD CPU out there. With a Volcano 7 w/ a quiet no name 80mm fan that pushes somewhere between 15-20cfm held the temps at 53 load and 48 idle, and the system was 100% stable. Now the Volcano 7 is by no means even close to being as good as the Alpha, and the fan is just totally crap 😀 So i think your Alpha and ur Papst will do fine 🙂

Edit: Forgot to mention thaht the above temps is with a Antex SX 1200 w/ 3 80mm input fans, 2 80mm output, 2 PSU fans and 1 92mm output fan. If i turn off ALL case cooling and just have my CPU and Vid card fan going, the idle temps jump to 59 😀 That's while watching a VCD. So it's not completely idle. But it ran fine for 2 1/2 hours while i watched Lord of the Rings 🙂

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm gonna go ahead and give it a try.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Sam
