I know the 8045 is a monster ...but is it worth changing from 6035 to o/c an Athlon XP 1700???

I switched from an Alpha 6035 to a Swiftech MC462 (from all reviews, the MC462 and Alpha 8045's performances are identical).

The temperature (according to motherboard) dropped from 53 degrees to 41 degrees celcius on my 1.33ghz Thunderbird.

But I should also add that at the same time that I switched from the Alpha to Swiftech, I also switched from silicon heatsink grease to Arctic Silver II, so some of the performance difference maybe attributed to that. Personally, I don't think I would have upgraded if I had to do it all over again, because the $52 I paid for the setup could have gone towards a new graphics card or CPU.

What I plan to d ois switch from Tbird 1.2 to Athlon XP 1700...I will use the AlphaPAL 6035 and switch to ASII as well

I agree the cost is too high so I am not sure I wish to do this...

I have had 3-4 Alpha's in my verious computers over the years and there are a couple of reasons why I stick with them and why I will prolly shortly buy a 8045. 1) they last thru 2-3 processor/mobo upgrades 2) they only need to be replaced when a better Alpha comes out :) 3) they hold their resale value pretty well. I never have spent the $20-$45 on a Alpha and said, "dang that is a lot of money just in a heatsink". I have been much more like this: "Well I can over clock this chip and maybe my next 2 chips using this heatsink, then sell it for around half or more of what I bought it for". I know it may not make any sense to anyone else, but its how I reason it out with myself.

As I said, I will prolly shortly buy a 8045, I don't have one yet, but IMHO ya sure its going to reduce temps why not. It may even get you a little more speed on the overclock. I can't gurantee what you will get for your 6035, but it will prolly be $13-$18 depending on the fan you have on there.

Depending on the fan, Your 6035 will handle the xp1700, but probably not for overclocking. The 6035 has been kinda forgotten in the rush to newer stuff, but will hang right in there with many of the more recent models.

You're right, the 8045 is a monster, I have a homeless one sitting on my desk. An overclocker's dream, even with a relatively quiet ~40cfm fan. From what I've seen, the point of diminished returns for fanpower is very low, just because the 8045 is so effective. Just be sure to buy a compatible mobo, these things are really really big....

Supposedly the Abit KR7A-RAID will support this HSF..but jeez it is $43 + shipping....

My AlphaPAL 6035 is running a Sunon fan ..got from 2cooltek ..he stated he found this sunon fan and the ys tech fan he used to sell(but much louder) to move the same amount of air...

The Alpha 8045 can be bought will a Panaflo fan from 2 cooltek...much quieter

Just not sure what to do...

Yeah, I live about 12miles from 2cooltek and Ian is da man! If you need to know anything about cooling, even if you didn't buy the stuff from him, he'll answer your questions for you, and if asked will recommend a solution for you that is always a price/performance winner instead of trying to push the more expensive stuff on you ;)

I'd just try it with the 6035, see how it goes. Overclocking an XP 1700 may not be worth the effort in terms of real world performance. The high end XP's are very near their limit, anyway, there's not a lot to be gained. 100mhz ain't what it used to be, not in terms of an overclock, anyway.

You can always give it up for the 8045 down the road if you think it's a good idea at the time- maybe the price will come down....

I live in Melbourne, FL and actually went over to Ian Felts of 2cooltek and picked up some fans from him before..got my AlphaPAL6035 from him...he is very helpful no doubt...

I do not expect a big overclock in terms of cpu speed..I a mhoping the cpu can do 1650 from stock of 1473(this maybe unrealistic but I should hit at 145 fsb or 1600) so I can run a 150 fsb assuming my components can do this...I have had most of these components at 146-148 fsb....but at 147+ I think the mobo is failing since I was getting bad cdr burns...at 146 everything is fine..I added PNY ram so I can not go as high as with just the mosel vitellic..I was able to boot W98 at 150 fsb(8x150)..W98 seem to run but but the cdr burns were bad

Though it could be the tosh cdrom..interesting when I overclock(even at 138fsb)... games almost always install bad but if I down clock and install everything is fine or if I install off my plex 121032 it went ok when I was overclocked..I think it has to do with the speed of the cdrom reads with large .pak files...
No longer have the plex switched to Liteon 24102B...it has 40x max read...
The interesting thing is if I backup software at fsb of 138 to 146 with tosh as reader...no problem making the backup works on other system ..take the same backup game and try to install with the toshiba overclocked if there are large files...100+ mg more compressed game install when try to play it crashes...so if I used the plex in my overclocked system or down clock for the install no sweat game runs fine....

I did not try the plex as a reader on 150fsb so I do not know for sure if it is mobo or tosh....hmmm..need to try this out....Guess I need to rip out the the PNY ram
