I just recieved the alpha pal8045 heatsink for my new xp processor. The copper bottom feels smooth but there are visible circular rings on the bottom. Do i need any special preperation to use this heatsink. I plan to use artic silver2 but i am concerned about the visible rings. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. mark:confused:

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think circles for machining are usually visible in heatsinks. Just apply it (AS II) and go. If you notice you have some higher than expected temps, maybe you should take another look or compare it with another, but it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I always lap my HSF's, so I dont really worry about the machining rings. Alpha is usually good about not leaving deep impressions in the surface of their HSF's, so I'm guessing the rings on your 8045 arent too bad. You can probably get away with leaving the rings there, since it is copper and in time, will shape to accomodate your CPU core.

Also, if it's further away from where the CPU contacts the HS it's even less of an issue. I have one on mine... nowhere near the CPU contact area.

I lap my H/sinks as well. Best way i have found to do it is get a piece of glass big enough to have a sheet of emery paper on it or bigger. Use some 320 grit I like to go around in a 3in circle with the h/s go to a 600 or higher then finish with the finest emery you can find i have 1500 grit auto body shops or a hardware store should have this paper. Goodluck Btw i am useing a pal 8045 i also had the machine circles in mine before lapping.

Thx Keaen,

I'm not sure I understand what you are doing with the glass. are you using the bottom of the glass (vertical while lapping) or are you using the side of the glass (horizontal while lapping)

Also, are you doing this with wet or dry emery paper?

Virtual Hideout has a guide to doing it.

I prefer to just lap with 320-600-1500 grit ;) Make sure you use a flat surface, such as a plane of glass from a picture frame :D I like to lube it with IPA, so it evaporates quickly. Water will take forever to evap.

Mine came the same way. I went ahead and lapped it smooth before installing it. The Swiftech MC462 I was running before the 8045 had a much smoother finish from the factory. The 8045 does work just as good as the Swiftech though.
