Alpha PAL8045: Possible to misalign when changing fan?

ive had the alpha pal8045 for awhile.. running with a sunon 80mm (39cfm). ive changed it a few times to test with other fans.. this last time though, it seems that my temps are up unusually.. i was wondering if it's possible, when switching the fan (im pretty careful when i do this btw), to misalign the heatsink (i really couldnt see the why since it's screwed in separately with it's own set of screws) to get these increased temps..

or it might just be the weather.. my indoor thermostat says 75 degrees farenheit (~ 24 C), it's been warmer outside the past few days, but even with this temp, i dont much difference in temp.

im running a athlon xp1700+ @ 148fsb = 1628Mhz.

idle temps around 40C cpu, 30C case.. in a antec sx1030, 4 panaflos (2 front, 2 back)

i wouldnt mind the temps, but after i switched back the sunon 39cfm fan, i've been locking up while running Tmpgenc (converting some stuff) ~43-44C cpu temp.. appreciate any thoughts.. i would really like to avoid removing and reinstalling the heatsink (has Arctic Silver 3 btw) since im going to have to tear the mobo out to do that.. thanks! 🙂

edit: these temps are measured thru the soyo dragon+ sensors. so im not sure how inaccurate they are..

As for misaligning, I guess you could shift it a bit so that the way the little bits of heatsink grease that were arranged in the microscopic gooves of the metal could have been shifted. But I doubt this would affect it much.

You should be able to remove the heatsink from the MB without taking it apart. I just got a 8045 and had to reseat it after installing it. 3/4 mounting screws stayed attached after unscrewing the spring scews. I was luckily able to position the nylon nut so that I could screw in the mounting screw without having to remove the MB. So it is possible, but you should be prepared for taking out the MB in any case.

But overall I would attribute you temp changes to the environment and wouldn't worry about reinstalling the heatsink.

Just so there's a second opinion for reinforcement, I agree -- 43-44 degrees is not going to cause a lock up. Youre talking a rather low temp there for lots of folks, especially if they bought a manufactured box. And, I also run an XP1700+, with a Tt Volcano 6cu+ (yeah, I went cheap - but it works), and generic silicone thermal grease and my idle for the last couple days went up one degree, from 41 to 42, in response to the hi 80's temps. No AC on yet in the house.

My mobo's default overheat reset is 65

Motherboard Monitor default overheat warning is 70

You definitely shouldn't be getting lockups at at 43-44C, you might if you are above 55C. Have you installed anything since you changed the fans? When is the last time you ran a virus scan? It is very hard to move the 8045 by changing the fans. Maybe if you tried mouting a ceiling fan, but I don't think you would do that. Or I hope not 😀 What have you changed in your system since you messed with the fans? Anything at all? I wouldn't mind removing my motherboard to remove the hsf if it was giving me problems like instability. What else are you going to do? Make sure you have the fans sucking away from the Alpha too.
