I want to upgrade my motherboard, and I have an Alpha PAL8045 on it.. one concern I have is whether or not I'll be able to get the Alpha off (and still be able to reuse it).. because if I recall, it was designed to go on and never come off.

Any comments?

thanks

It can be removed. Removing it requires removing the motherboard from the case, but you would be doing that anyway. Check Alpha's fit list to ensure that your new motherboard is compatible with the 8045... some have clearance problems.

how do you go about doing it?

i thought that after you tightened the screws to a certain point they wouldnt tighten anymore? can you unscrew them? or do you have to take the plastic nuts off of the bottom of the board?

Unscrew the spring screws from the top of the 8045, when they're off you can remove the heat sink. All you have to do then is loosen the plastic nuts on the back of your mother board, and the standoffs on the front side can be removed. Then just install it on the new board in the reverse order.

I slip a 1/4" open-end wrench under the edge of the heatsink to hold the aluminum standoff so it can't turn as I unscrew the spring screws from them.

I've put the 8045 on and removed it, with...well, can't say "no problems" because it is a bit of a challenge to install for someone who's never done it before. But to remove it, just pretty much unscrew the fan screws, then the retaining screws. Pretty much, you just reverse the installation procedure.
