Alpha PAL 6035..Artic Silver vs thermal grease

Hi..I bought the Alpha PAL 6035 kit with thermal silicone grease from 2cooltek...my 1.2ghz tbird runs at idle temp in the bios on Asus A7V133 at about 50-51C if I o/c to 1.4ghz I get 54C...
what can I realistically expect in temp drop from Artic Silver??

I am not sure I want to risk removing the HSF .... but at 1.2@1.4ghz will on some boots give a windows registry error so I wonder whether I am heated related.

Please remember the Asus boards report higher temps..so I know the chip is warm but not too bad for Asus board.

I'm no expert here but about 2-3C fall in temperature is what I'd expect!
your registry errors can simply be related to you o/clock as opposed to your temperature which isn't that high!

If you're overclocking the FSB, then you are most likely getting the errors due to the increased speed of your HD. Not heat related.

Do you think I should take the Maxtor 30gb ata100 off the promise ata100 controller and place on the primary ide??

I have a maxtor 10gb ata66 that runs fine on a 140 fsb as slave on primnary ide controller on bx board

Do you think it is the 1.2ghz tbird not liking 1.4....it will post up to 1485 the chip put I can not load windows..I can load windows but get registry errors at 1430s

Well, any time windows fails to load, or loads part way you're also asking for trouble. So I'd just try different configs. You won't be seeing much difference from ata100 to ata66, so that's worth a try for one.

I know my ram doesn't like it when I get my FSB up to 150.. so I just drop it a tad and it will work fine. Never had any registry errors either, and I have my 30 gig ata100 maxtor on my ata66 IDE. So, just keep playing with it.
