Almost time to upgrade CPU. Why pay extra for 939 and good mobo?

My current system (not all of it):
AXP1800+ Palomino
Shuttle AK35GT2
768 MB PC2100 DDR
Seasonic Super Silence 460 Watt
BFG6800 NU OC AGP

I like to keep a fairly budget/mid-level system. I just got the vid card sort of as an emergency because my old one died on me. I was planning on upgrading the CPU anyway. I want an Athlon 64. Why should I pay extra for a more quality CPU/mobo when I'll have to replace the mobo again when my vid card becomes obsolete? I figure, might as well go PCIe then right? I'm thinking I might as well just get something cheaper regardless of upgrade path because I'll have to replace the mobo anyway. I might be able to reuse the RAM depending on other stuff (on the next upgrade when going to PCIe. I'l switching RAM for sure now). So, why should I pay extra instead of getting one of those Fry's deals? I'm just trying to consider all my options.

Thanks

People pay more for the hope of upgrading, but often by the time they're ready to upgrade the available CPUs don't offer the best price / performance any more.

I think you're smart not to waste money on an expensive mobo right now. I'd wait to see what's on sale this friday (black friday). I know their combos are usually insanly low and should be enough to get you by for a while.
