Sold my Amd athlon x2 4200+ (2.2ghz stock, 512kb cache x 2) which was a terrible overclocker (2.4ghz - 2.5ghz stable) on a Gigabyte Nforce4-Ultra SLI (solid stable motherboard, in single and SLI config) which gave me 8100 score in 3dmark using a Gainward 7950GX2 (600mhz core, 1500mhz mem)
So, bought an Intel E6600 Core2Duo (2.4ghz stock, 4mb cache), 2 x 1GB Geil Ultra (3-4-4-8 at 667mhz) and Asus P5W DH Deluxe (intel 975 chipset)
Overclocked the e6600 to 3.4ghz (9x378), running the memory at 378mhz (DDR756) at 4-4-4-12,
cpu voltage 1.45v
fsb cutoff 1.4v
mch 1.60
memory 2.2v
3dmark06 score now is 9985
system is prime stable running 2 instances (one per core).
I tried shooting for 3.5 or 3.6 even 3.7 ghz, system boots fine but at 3.7 ghz I get blue screen when entering the windows desktop. At 3.6ghz it's also acting up, and at 3.5ghz it's working but prime95 fails on the second core.
temps are 38-40 idle, up to 50C when running dual prime95.
so far so good 🙂
In the past I used to own 7800gtx x 2 (sli) (with 256mb ram, but I find the 7950GX2 to handle games much more smooth than 2 separate cards. I probably can get better performance using 7900GTX SLI or Crossfire but the added wattage to the system, the heat and the $$ is not worth the marginal 15% increase in performance I'd get.
Whole system specs:
processor: Core2Duo e6600 2.4ghz oced to 3.4ghz (9x378, 1.45v)
cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 6+ in silent mode (1800rpm) - awesome cooler
additional: 120mm coolermaster rear case fan
motherboard: Asus p5W DH Deluxe (wifi, remote) bios 0701
ram: 2 x 1gb geil, 667mhz (at 756mhz (3-4-4-10)
hdd: maxtor 300gb 16mb cache
case: chieftec dragon
psu: color sit (german, noname, but cheap and good) 500w
screen: 20.1 philips brilliance 200w6 (1600x1050)
mouse: logitech g7
kb: logitech g15
sound: X-fi music
speakers: logitech z5500
pad: x-pad coolermaser aluminium
Very happy with this rig, hussle free install, stable temparatures, easy bios. Much more solid feel than the Gigabyte NF4 + X2. Pitty I can't get it to run at a rounded number of 3.5ghz 🙂 But 1ghz overclock is more than fine with me.
The core2duo e6600 is a gem just like AMD's opteron 165! (mine runs stable at 2.6ghz)
