Almost ready to network the house!

Alright...so I've posted here before and first off I'd like to thank EVERYONE who posted in my last thread. The wealth of knowledge floating around here is phenomenal!

So...we finally bought out house (a different one than I posted about) so I'm kind of stuck as to how to run my wires.

I did buy a router (Netgear WNDR4000)...very nice thus far and I have my 25mb cable thanks to comcast.

This is a 1400sq ft house, 3bd, 1 hall closet and 1 coat closet. I don't see any good way to run the cable besides either from underneath (in a crawl space..not sure it's the setup I want for my equipment) or from the Garage (in the attic).

I'm thinking that the attic is my best bet and I think it would be fine up there. What is your input on WHERE to put this stuff? I don't want a full fledge rack and I'm only going to need like an 8-port switch I think but I may end up getting a 12-port just to make sure.

I was thinking of creating a little box (out of one of THESE as opposed to buying a patch panel that I'd need to rack-mount. I could build this box out of wood and mount it somewhere in the attic and run all the cabling to it. ^_^ Would work fine right?

That works in place of a patch panel fine. To make your life easier just make sure to keep the keystones and cable all the same class. IE don't put 5e keystones on 6A cable etc. The wire sizes are different.

Oh yea of course! I plan on going all Cat6 since that's the quickest out right now and I could use the speed anyway (video streaming). ^_^

Attics can get really warm in the summer time, it might be something to consider if you're putting a switch up there, you'll also need power for the switch, most attics don't have outlets. I'm not sure I understand the setup you have in mind though, you kind of ramble a bit.

The wall plate with keystones will be fine, but when I networked my house it was actually cheaper to buy a 12 port patch panel with a wall mount than it was to buy the wall plate with 12 keystones. I think this is the one I bought: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10514&cs_id=1051402&p_id=7299&seq=1&format=2 the Cat6 patch panel is about a dollar more. It looks like 12 keystones and the wall plate cost about the same now, but you have the aggrivation of having to build a box to mount it, the patch panel just snaps into the bracket you bolt to the wall.

Yea, my plan is just to have my router/switch mounted on a board in the attic and then have the writing run to 5 different rooms in the house. I'm thinkingI'm going to get a 12 per switch now..part of my reason for wanting to make my own patch bc they don't make a 12 port patch for whatever reason.
