Almost OT. WinXP Pro -

Definitely rocks.

I liked Win2K very much - but I must admit that M$ did a pretty darned good job on XP Pro.

Very fast - very flexible, nice native driver collection. Overall... "two thumbs up".

My HDD died on Friday - so I had to replace it. I don't know if the sale is everywhere - but at Office Depot, I was able to pick up a Maxtor 80 GB Ultra ATA 133 7200RPM HDD for $69.00 :Q

That's $109 with a $10 store instant discount, and a $30 mail-in rebate.

Can't go too far wrong with that deal.
Overall... a pleasant birthday for me. 😉

Wow... Someone actually likes XP PRO??? Hmmm, I dunno, I refuse to get a book on it. I'm sure its pretty easy to figure out. But, I had it on 3 diffrent computers and I hated it ever since I got it.

This was the only reason I liked XP and had it on for 3 months till I figured 2000 was just better... Still couldn't choke down the XP search... I guess I am really stuck on 2000. But, If I had it my way I'd make everyone use Linux and choose a shell. 🙂

If you gonna insist on using XP at least do these 20 or so steps!!!

This should have been printed out and sent along wth ever XP CD that MicorShaft ever printed (sold)...

I like winxp pro so much that I bought a copy for my p4 3.2ghz dell system that I ordered. Plus it comes in a nice folder/cd holder and the hologram cd is neat to look at.

I like it too - quite stable compared to Win98SE. Much better memory handling. It does like more RAM than its predecessors though; my system has 1GB though, and WinXP seems to be quite happy.

OfficeDepot.com (maybe store, too?) has a Maxtor 120GB w/8MB buffer for $109.84. Add a $20 coupon and a $30 MIR and...nice deal! (It's in the Hot Deals section)

🙂

And, yeah, XP is sweet!

Dan, I can't believe you are just now trying XP! :Q I got a copy a few weeks before the general release date and love it! I built a system for my cousin in Florida using XP Pro and my Mother saw it on a visit! She turned green with envy and told me about it on my next weekly call. So, I got her a copy of XP Home for her 85th birthday.

Anyway, enjoy! 🙂

I like it too, once you cut away all the crap. Get rid of that damn nasty skin, disable a good 75% of services, and basically do everything in that guide, and it's a great, stable, fast operating system, no matter what people say otherwise. I do prefer Windows 98's ease of use and access to important stuff. I hate XP's way of handling networking and users.

Thanks for the link on that. I'll have to run that over my machines at home.

But, that site is horrid looking. Green text on a black background = teh sux0r!

I guess I should've mentioned that I neutered all the crap that makes it like like a MAC, with classic windows, and did a bunch of registry hacks to kill the messenger (no pun intended) :Q and various other tweaks.

Essentially the look and feel is Win2K, but with "prettier" icons.

I waited so long just because I liked 2K so well. I was using NT4.0 up until 3 years ago for the same reasons. Any OS that allows me to run for months at a time without a reboot is ok by me. We'll see if XP lives up to that level of stability, but so far - so good. 🙂

First, Happy Birthday Danc! 😀

Second, that's a good article. Even though I haven't switched to XP, as my Win2K box is working just fine, if/when I do switch it would be to XP Pro.

The only thing I disagree with in the article is this:

First off, most of you know that Firewalls are an annoyance, not a necessity. The average user, using a good anti-virus program, has no need for a firewall. And for those of you that think you do need one, would you REALLY trust one made by Microsoft, the Great Security Satan? Of course not...

If you have a broadband/high speed always on connection, a firewall is a MUST! Anti-virus software will NOT stop hackers from attacking your PC.

Although I do agree with the last statement about Microsoft, and trusting some firewall built into the system. Heh.

Happy Birthday Dan!!! 😀😀😀

I've been elevated to hero status by my friends after they install XP and tell me how slow it seems, then I go in & disable all the MS spyware - I cannot believe they would have remote registry & etc... on by default

Afterwards it always seems to them like a new machine, so much faster and they are so pleased with the OS look & feel.

Thanks for the b-day wishes guys. 🙂

btw....
Speaking of birthdays - it looks like I just may have a gift in the making.

I had an interview Friday - 2 more today, I have one Thursday, one next Monday, and just got a call for one on August 12th. The "dry spell" may soon be over. Thank God!
