I have tried everything possible setting to connect my 2 computers via NIC cards using a crossover cable. I have followed to the letter from 2 books & several help sites, but to no avail. I cannot see the the 2nd puter from either system. I even went check out the settings over at my work site network. Both use wdws98. Could it be I really don't have a crossover cable?....the person I bought it from said it was. Any ideas out there?....

We kind of need to see the IP addresses for both comps.

But barring that, try installing IPX. It's the only way I can get my two computers to see each other. Others here just use TCP/IP but I don't know how.
 
All is fine in the device mangler. The 2nd puter has the same settings, 'cept for the ip address is ....10.10.200.2
 
Have you tried pinging the other system to see if you can find it?? If you can't ping it, then it's likely your cabling is the problem.

And I would still try the IPX thing.

Windows includes a program

open a command prompt window then type : ping 10.10.200.2 or ping 10.10.200.1 depending on the computer you are using at the time.
 
Terminators are used with BNC type cabling. I think you have a RJ45 type since I haven't heard of a crossover cable for BNC type.

Open an MS-DOS window on the 10.10.200.1 computer and type:
ping 10.10.200.2

If there is a response, your network is functional. If not, it is probably your cable, since the settings seem fine. You could also try IP addresses that begin with 192.168.1.x. Good luck.

Another thing to attempt b4 you go buy that, try pinging from the other machine and then switching which computer the crossover cable is connected to.

EDIT : btw, your link is messed. You need to add f to the gi to get gif 🙂
 
El Diablo I pinged using the other puter, and same result, no contact. Yea, I caught the link screwup riteaway.
 
I guess try the new crossover cable.

Man, these problems are the worst . You never have any idea if it's the cabling or the cards or what. 😕
 
The led's work on the cards, so I'll have to trek 40 miles to get a new cable. Will let you all know later tunite if it works........thanks you all very much.
 
UPDATE:: It was not the cable. After putting in a new one, still no go. So, it had to be sumthing with the settings. I reread the little book that came with the NIC, and lo & behold I missed one little section. I had to add the client for Netware network, IPS/SPX protocol and NetBEUI !!.

BINGO!!, it worked!!.

Well, I learned another lesson with all this: RTFM (read the f...... manual)


One thing however, I can read back and forth between puters, but the pings aren't successful.
I get timed out messages on main puter, and a cannot reach destination message on the backup system. any solutions to the ping matter?

The reason your ping's are not successful is because your network is not actually using TCP/IP. You are able to access each computer via your newly added protocals either Netbui or IPX/SPX. You shouldn't need the Client for Netware for you are not on a Novell network.

if you ping the computer name right now you should get a response back. Your network works but TCP/IP apps will not work right between the two computers. You will always need to use computer names. If you are happy right now then fine if not then there are other things you can trouble shoot. I would remove the Netware Client though because you do not need it. Most likley you are using Netbui because you didn't say you enabled Netbios for IPX.
