I'm driving in to work this morning, in the left lane of a 2 lane divided road, speed limit is 45mph when I notice a large black dog running across the road from my left. He gets into the median, which divides the two side and is about as wide as a lane, and he's on a trajectory that will take him right into the road in front of me. I get on the brakes and sure enough he darts right out in front of me. I am really braking hard now and feel just a hint of pulsation from the ABS as I'm watching my front end chase this dog down. I came to a stop just a couple feet short of him and he keeps on running down the road. I was close enough that part of him was obscured by my hood. I just had a feeling that dumb mutt was going to run out in front of my car. Glad I started braking when I did because if I had started braking any later I would have killed that dumb dog.

After I stopped I checked my mirrors and of course everyone behind me was stopping to avoid plowing into the back of me. Fortunately, nobody was tailgating me.

Kind of glad I didn't ride my motorcycle today.

Stupid people, keep your pets on a leash or in your yard!

You do realize that if you had taken your motorcycle you wouldn't have found yourself at that point in time today?

If someone was tailgating you, you would have found out about it long before you came to a complete stop and took that look in your mirrors

It's possible but I might have started earlier so that I would leave at the same time too. Even if I left a little later I would have filtered up through traffic so I would be through the lights earlier. You just never know.

I'm confident that I would have handled that situation just fine on the bike but it is something I would rather have happen when I'm behind the wheel of a 3,200lb car than on a 400lb motorcycle.

It's good that you didn't run over this dog, but this isn't newsworthy until you actually hit the dog.

I you had hit the dog on the bike, control would have been lost and a San Diego roadway would have an extra paint job

Good job stopping

i'd rather run over a dog then get into a car accident

o_O So, I suppose if you had been in that situation you would have just hit the dog and taken no action to avoid hitting the dog? You would have hit the dog and likely done damage to your car. That qualifies as an accident.

I didn't lose control of my car and there was no accident. What I did was avoid an accident.

I bet you were like "damn, that was close, glad I didn't hit the dog...but sweet, I have something to post about on ATOT now!"

Sorry, I didn't mean to clutter up ATOT from the usual stories of potato chips, car stickers, wife plotting to kill chickens, whitney houston, and cheese pizza. :p

I accidentally ran over someone's cat a few years ago...it went right under my tire and felt like a small speed bump. The cat raced out of nowhere and while I was driving the speed limit and slammed on the brakes, there was no way I could slow down in time and couldn't swerve to miss it because I was boxed in by another car. I felt pretty bad, but really nothing I could have done.

Yeah, I hit someone's dog once many years ago. I was driving down a narrow city street and this dog ran out from between 2 parked cars. There was nothing I could do to avoid hitting it. It was a small-medium size dog and it ran off yelping. I stopped and tried to find it but couldn't.

Poor dog. :'(

Several years ago someone hit a dog and left him to die in street near our house which is near a 4 lane highway. I had to take my truck out and bring him in and called the vet. The owner showed up 30 min later to go to the vet with him and I later found out the dog had to be put to sleep because its back was broken. The owner was bawling about how his dog roams around all the time outside the house but would never go into the street - all I could think to myself was "You f***ing idiot!".

if someone is riding my ass in a residential area, I slow down until I could stop for whatever is needed.

If they want to pass in the double yellow, that's on them.

Don't let others dictate what danger you will have to put yourself in.

If I see a kid or pet on the roadside, I usually slow down way below the speed limit until I pass. Also in most areas this is required as well as allowing at least 3' between your car and them (even if they are standing on the edge of the road).

asshats go flying down kids playing in the swales here at 60-70mph...posted is 25.
