It feels a lot like obeying the law.

Seriously, I have no sympathy whatsoever for a person who injures himself because he is too stupid to follow the laws of the road. I do not want them to get hurt and in an ideal world they would never get injured no matter how much of a dumbass they were about flauting the law. However, if they do get hurt from doing things like running lights it's their own fault I have no sympathy for them. (I reserve the right to have sympathy for their loved ones because it's tough to have a friend or family member get injured, even if it is that person's own fault.)

Regarding the "it's a pain to stop all the time" argument, I would save a whole bunch of gasoline if I just blew through stop signs with my car. I should be allowed to do so because it's easier. Oh, wait that's stupid. Oh, and it's the exact same argument you're using to justify breaking the law on your bicycle.

Most cyclists are good and follow the rules. But you idiots who run stop signs, go straight from the right side of a right-turn-only lane or otherwise flaut the rules of the road are just begging to get hit.

ZV

Well like i said... i dont do it when theres people around nor do i go full speed ahead when theres no one around... but anyone who does when they know theres traffic around them is in fact waiting to get hit like you said. I'm not advocating to go run stop signs everywhere... but im sure not everyone here comes to a full stop at stop signs while driving either. Cars arent excatly 20lbs bicycles and if theres anyone thats going to get hurt in an accident for running a stop sign... it would be the person riding a bicycle. That's not to justify running stop signs on bicycles either. Theres a lot of ignorant aholes on both sides... and I know some of you riding motorcycles as well know that there are a lot more idiots in cars who are oblivious to their surroundings. I havent been hit riding a bicycle or a motorcycle but thats probably because Los Angeles is full of idiot drivers and i would rather be an hour late and be defensive riding around rather than force my right of way if it was mine.

yesterday i was riding my bike alongside this girl and as we were coming up to a stop sign, i slowed down, at the very sametime that a cop came to on the cross-road... i stopped, and she blew it, and the cop ignored it.

it pissed me off to no ends... especially because i have a waiting court date for my ticket for "disregarding a red light":

1. i was wearing a helmet, and had rear AND front blinkers. im cognizant of my safety
2. i stopped at the red light--didnt 'blow' or 'roll' through it.
3. i waited till the cross-traffic was completely clear before proceeding
4. i was on an upgrade, and there was no bike lane, so by distancing myself away i was actually facilitating the traffic flow

anyways, if there is traffic, i make sure i stop my asz and obey all rules as would any driver around me. if there no cars within sight, im going through the signs and lights. blow me

way to generalize... by your logic... i will generalize all drivers are reckless and oblivious to their surroundings as well. 😛

it's pretty obvious (since the topic is about bicyclists who ignore traffic signs/signals) that I was implying that bicyclists who ignore traffic signs/signals are the hazard.

you were quoting acemcmac... so i assumed you generalized him as one of those reckless bikers. i dont think he is one... i think he is equivalent to drivers who do rolling stops... that i am sure everyone is guilty of. 🙂

I don't always follow the letter of the law when I'm on a bike, but here's what I do.

As it turns out, riding on the road is really, really dangerous for cyclists. IF the sidewalk is completely clear of people, I ride on the sidewalk. If there are people, I slow down to the speed of the people and carefully go around them. Sometimes I even wheel my bike. If the sidewalk has a lot of people, I ride on the road, trying to stay as far right as possible. As someone who both drives and bikes, I know that bikers are really annoying to drivers and vice versa.

As far as stop signs go, IF there's a stop sign with no blind spots at all (like at my university...there's a "t" junction that's easy to see in every direction for a long ways), and I see no cars or peds trying to cross, I don't stop. I'm very careful to look in all directions for cars AND peds AND other bikes before doing so, though.

IF I ever do anything stupid and get hit, I will accept full responsibility since, after all, it was my own dumb fault. If I get hurt, I pay my own medical bills.

of course. no responsible biker would do any less. how does any of this excuse people making turns on red when they need to be yeilding to bikes on foot or otherwise?

BTW: saw the cruiser that hit me tonight. I messed that biatch up good

Just ride the bike on the sidewalk. This crazy mishmash of car laws and pedestrian laws applying to bikes is retarded. No one knows what the laws are and bikes are to slow be a vehicle on roads. I never had a problem with guys on bikes on side walks...I just kind of get out of their way.

no problem. BTW, stopped at the police station the other day to see him and ask him if he wouldnt mind keeping a closer eye on the traffic signs so things like this dont happen... guess what? He says its my fault for entering the intersection. Hang on... I got to the intersection and stopped, all before he came... that means I get to go... vehicle law.... I get hit and its my fault  Seriosly... I dont have to ride my bike... I could just as easily tool around town in my Mustang... but no, this is my contribution to society here....

Ill be a martyr all I want tyvm 😀

At least Im not wearing a bomb belt, right?

The biggest problems I have with bicyclists are:
A: When they ride on roads that are all blind corners, and no shoulders.
B: They do 1/2MPH up a hill and expect cars to nicely burn thier clutches behind them until they get to the top of the hill where they can do almost traffic speed (but don't).
C: They're in large groups, at which point even red lights are meaningless.

For some reason the bicyclists around the area where I work figure that since up in the hills noone lives/commutes, that it's a good area to get 500 people together and ride bikes. I'm willing to bet there's no permits involved. Now, all the locals know that these roads are major roads that often get 1000+ cars/hour travel, and there's not a whole lot of ways around. So when the bicylists show up it's alot like the Family Guy episode about the "Leafers". A trip to the store goes from 10 minutes each way to half an hour. Noone seems to remember logging trucks, gravel trucks, and families rely on these roads.

I don't mind the bicyclists near my work, they share the road just fine, the roads are well suited for it, and there's a damned good reason for riding a bike.

Cars aren't allowed to go on bike pathes, cruising is illegal, and idiots driving get tickets (often by a camera and in the mail).

End Rant.

Cyclists are NOT PEDESTRIANS. A person on a bicycle is legally a vehicle and as such is required to obey any and all traffic laws that are applicable to motor vehicles. In most cities if you are over 16 you can be ticketed for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, this is often not enforced, but it is on the books.

Yep.

Although I did have a cop tell me to get on the sidewalk once. I pointed out that this was explicitly illegal according to GA code and he pulled the "DON'T YOU TELL ME WHAT THE LAW SAYS YOU CANDY-ASS LITTLE *&$(&^%(*&^(*&!!!!! routine.

It's illegal.

It's dangerous for the person on the bike and the peds. If I'm out training, I'm doing 20-30mph....you don't want me on the sidewalk. Also, you then don't have the right-of-way crossing side streets, so if a car turns and nails you, you're screwed legally.

Thanks, but, no thanks. (Try riding a road bike 20+ MPH on the sidewalk for a mile in the city. It just doesn't work.)

I got pulled over by a cop once for blowing through a stop sign on a bicycle. The stop sign was at the bottom of a big hill and after the stop sign is a big uphill grade so I was hauling to get a nice start on the uphill part when I went through there. He was nice enough about it and just gave me a warning. He was right though (even though it wasn't a busy street and there was NOBODY around-well, other than the cop). I generally obey all traffic laws when I'm on the bike though.

I've hit 39mph on my road bike a few times commuting to work on a nice downhill grade near my house. There is no way I'd ever ride on the sidewalk. I've been blocked by more asshats in cars sitting in the bike lane than I can count.

Oops, meant to do that as an edit. I guess I hit reply by mistake...
