I get up to the counter and write the check and the girl at the cash register hands the check back to me and says its been "declined" and gives me a number to call I call it and the hardly-english speaking guy on the other end says it was declined because there was "not enough check writing experience on the account." Basically I don't write enough checks!!! HUH!?!?!? How the HELL am I supposed to get "enough check writing experience" if noone will take my checks?!!? It was embarassing as hell and I was humiliated if front of alot of people... I am half tempted to sue for humiliation. Can I? There was NO sign or anything they didn't take "inexperienced checks" or anything to that effect. They could AT LEAST put a sign up near the register saying something to that effect. I don't know what it is with staples, but its a hassle everytime I go in there....

Never heard of a check being declined just because you don't write enough checks.

The only solution: Stop Shopping at Staples

I only go in there when i find a really hot deal, or if i cant find what i need elsewhere.

Stop using checks! In all my 27 years in Canada, i have NEVER EVER seen anybody use a check in a store... the only place i've seen this happen was in the US.

I work at staples, and I can tell you for sure that there is no policy like this. The only check policy we have is that if you have not paid with a check recently at staples, you have to show some form of identification (drivers license, military ID, etc.)

I smell B.S.

I remember paying for tuition or something (for some reason they required a check), and the lady told me they wouldn't take checks numbered below #200. I asked her if she realized that the number the checks start at is pretty much arbitrary (ie, my bank asked me what number to start at) and she gave me some blank stare.

Thankfully most banks send you like 10 books of checks when you open an account (I had just moved to cali for school so my wells fargo account was pretty new), so I took a check from one of the later books (numbered 300 or so) and used that.

When I got my first checking account, the lady suggested that I start them at 500 for that very reason.

This happened to me once at Best Buy WAY back when. I had just opened a new account with a new bank, and my first check was #1. They refused to take it for that very reason, it was hilarious. I asked them if they wanted me to come back with proof of me making 80k a year. They stared blankly. So I grabbed the 7th or so checkbook I had just gotten (had them all with me that day for some reason) took out check number 400 or so, and wrote another check, and they accepted it.....all within a matter of 5 minutes. I laughed at them. They just kinda stared blankly. This is when people simply refuse to use their brains and just do what the machine/rules say. funny.

Exactly what I did on my checking account. Sometimes stores won't accept checks simply based on the check number if it is too low.

Doctors don't ever have a patient #1 either.

You were told to contact the check-authorization company. You should have been given a small beige card with a number explaining the situation. The checks are authorized by a third party company, (should be certegy), after meeting a certain number of factors, including the check number, id, phone number/addy printed on check, etc.

Come on, you don't need to crap in every thread. I would have been upset too.

Anyway.. That is definately fscked. I would have made a big stink about it, got supervisors and managers involved.

The associate should not have said it was declined. Its not proper terminology and can cause embarrasment. Usually, alternate form of payment is mentioned. There should have been a memo issued regarding this. However, if the associate had reason to believe that the check was invalid for some reason, he/she could have called it in, so that it would be rejected.

How was he humiliated? Humiliated because Staple's Check Processor won't take checks that are that young? Getting the managers involved will do nothing, because it is very likely that their processor was picked by Corporate and they don't have the power to individually authorize checks. As if I ever cared about your opinion anyway Eli...never have and never will.

How can someone feel humiliated or ridiculed because their check didn't go through? How? Whip out your check card or credit card and finish your purchase. Only whiny little bitches would feel slighted by a store policy like that.

Based on personal experience, I would guess that something else was involved.

I've had the check processor kick my check back many times and all the checker did was ask for my drivers license for personal information. I've had perfectly good credit cards get declined, too. Once the card was declined, even though I knew it was good, so I whipped out another which was also declined. I was starting to wonder if maybe someone had stolen my identity, so I pulled out a third (yes, I used to carry a wallet full of CC's that I seldom used) and it was accepted.

I was never embarassed or humiliated. I knew I was legit and that it was a glitch with their hardware or the processing company. One of the things I do nowdays is service those check readers. The biggest problem they have is dirt buildup on the magnetic reading head. The store employees are too stupid to be allowed to use a can of air to blow them out. Come to think of it, that's easy money in my pocket.:Q
