Almost gave away my eBay account to scammer

i can't believe i fell for one of those fake emails. usually, i can spot them right away, even if they've got some fancy graphics just like the authentic sites. this is just a plain text email i got saying my account has been suspended for "seller non-performance". i guess i panic because i sold an item last week and i have another on-going listing. boy, do i feel stupid. of course, i noticed it right and changed my password. 😉

When in doubt, ALWAYS go to the ACTUAL site and log in there to see if you need to do something.

When not in doubt, delete the email. My spam folder usually catches most of these, but sometimes one gets through.

Hello, those of you on your high horse, it's only a matter of time until you get scammed too.

I got a notice about an offer to become a power seller on Ebay. I jumped at the "chance" and the link looked totally legit. As soon as I "logged in", I then got suspicious and tried to re-log in to My Ebay.

The password had been changed! I got on the phone and the whole thing was fixed in less than 30 minutes. Under my username a bunch of jewelry had been listed.

I learned my lesson. Careful, it could happen to you too.

Dear User,

I'm from eBay, I need your password but haven't been able to contact you except through here. Please PM me your username/pw immediately or your account will be canceled.

Sincerely

Syringer
eBay customer service representative

Wrong.

Avoid weak passwords.
Don't use the same username/password at multiple sites.
Don't click on links in emails.

And you won't get phished. It's easy!

Wrong again.

Even if I receive legit e-mails from Paypal/eBay/my banks/cc, I never click the link in the e-mail. Instead I manually go to www.paypal.com

Paranoid? Of course.

Scammed? Nope.

Still not 100% safe. But, that's what I do. IIRC, a year or so ago, a LOT of people kept complaining in the forums here that Google, Yahoo, etc. were all down for them... It turned out that some sort of spyware had changed their hosts file.

Someone with malicious intent could possibly change your hosts file so that when you type in www. ebay. com, it redirects you to some other site, unbeknownst to you. (of course, you can protect your hosts file, but there still no "100%" security, as long as you're connected to the internet.)

Good point but I was addressing the e-mail issue 🙂

Are you joking? i type in all of my web addresses by IP, and I changed my host file to an image of Jessica Alba renamed to hosts, so I have no worries.

9/10. Missed the one "from ebay" that listed the credit card and expiry date and stuff.. That's not really a fair question because you don't know if that info is real or not. If it's real, it's legit, if not, it's phishing. The Dear eBay Member should have given it away though.

I passed the test, i got 100%
I was quite surprised, as i havnt even finished school.
It was real easy, almost every email that isnt personalised is phising, but to make sure you could just look at the url, as that tells you where it was set from, and well it would have to be from the mentiond company.

Easy as pie.

And ive never been close to falling for a scam before.
