Almost every second time I start my computer, it re-establishes my system files and reg. base

ARG! almost every second time I boot nowadays, the stupid scandisk thing kicks in, and with the message that it found an error in my system files, it re-establishes the system files and an older copy of my reg-base (what the hell is it called......the thing you edit with regedit.exe). this means that my newest settings always get screwed, and if I'm downloading something with Getright, it gets fukked up because it saves its info in the regbase.

I've had a troublesome harddrive (34GXP IBM 20.5 Gb) with two bad sectors so far, could this be the problem?

thanks

Run the system file checker utility in windows, it can restore corrupt files. It sounds like you have some corruption. If you cant fix it that way, run a thorough scandisk to check the drive for bad sectors. If non found, then you probably need to wipe the drive and reinstall.

I had a similar problem and after a long and arduous bout of troubleshooting, it turned out to be the memory.

I wiped out and reinstalled several times. Tweaked and probed. Ran every diagnostic I could find on the web. Pulled cards one by one. Checked power supply voltages. Ran Scandisk, system file checker and prayed to both the North and Southbridge gods.

It was the memory.

I also had a simmilar problem but mine was due to a capacitor in my monitor going bad. It was sending alot of electricity down the video cable and it really hosed my system until I figured out what it was. I swapped monitors and it has been just fine ever since. How old is that monitor you are using?
