Almost done! Choosing memory. 2 Newegg links. 6GB DDR3. Suggestions?

Those are the two best deals on 6GB DDR3 memory Ive found so far. I dont know much about memory and timings etc, but do you guys have any suggestions? Does one look better than the other?

I want to overclock with my i7 920 and my ASUS Rampage II Extreme. Im water-cooled also.

Current Setup:
4x Gateway Monitors. 3x24inchs (1920x1200) + 1x21inch (1280x720)
1x ATI HD4870 Graphics Card
1x ATI x1900 XTX Graphics Card
1x i7 920 Processor
1x ASUS Rampage II Extreme Mobo
0x MEMORY
1x Corsair HX620 PowerSupply
1x Creative X-FI Platinum Sound Card
1x Custom Liquid Cooling Setup. DIY SETUP.

That sounds like a recipe for disaster right there. I would suggest reading up on memory and timings.

if you don't KNOW you better learn BEFORE overclocking. then you wouldn't really need to ask people who know what to buy.

Yeah.. sorry. As weird as this sounds, I mostly use the ASUS Auto-overclock, or adjust the CPU overclock manually. I usually dont mess with the memory that much. Usually just auto-overclock it, then adjust the FSB and cpu voltage afterwards until I get a good temp/speed.

But... as u guys have pointed out and made me feel horrible/stupid about.... seems like if I pick that, I'ld be in for a disaster.

If it isn't too much to ask, can you guys at least post your memory type? Something good that I can get good results from? I want to get quality stuff this time. Budget is 70-160 for 6GB.

Sorry, didn't mean to make you feel dumb. I was just alarmed that you planned on OCing with water no less before learning about memory. For personal opinion, I tend to like Crucial, Corsair, and G.Skill over OCZ as the latter tends to have higher volts on their ram for some odd reason. I'm not saying OCZ is bad or anything.

The Plat is the cheapest, Blade is most expensive, and the Muskin... I haven't really heard about. But it was recommended. Any preference with these three? Is the OCZ Blade really worth the extra 60.00? Is it that much better?

Corsair kind of looks good.. so im leaning towards what Arcane posted.

It's a toss up, both will be good buys and both are from the 2 biggest people in RAM. Personally I'd go the Corsair as I like the heatspreaders and I have some overclocked Corsair DDR400 still going strong in my old DFI NF4 SLI-D + Athlon 64.

Of those two, the OCZ.

This kit can do 1800 9-9-9 as per XMP2 for a few bux more.

haha thanks n7. You added the XMP kit I originally posted back in the loop. Now I have to decide between the two OCZ's and the Corsair.

If Im reading your post correctly n7, you're saying out of the Plat and Corsair, you'ld chose the Plat. But out of the Plat and OCZ XMP-Ready, you'ld get the XMP?

Does XMP really help when overclocking, only drawback it gets hotter?

Ps: Ordering in 3 hours!!

Going with the OCZ's. Just made the final decision. Thanks guys!!

I have a feeling they will do good!! Think I can hit 4Ghz with water cooling and my Rampage II Extreme?

OCZ calls their DDR3 1.65v kits "Low Voltage Desktop Memory".
Yet the JEDEC DDR3 voltage specification is only 1.5v

How can OCZ advertise their kits as "Low Voltage"?

Exactly - it's lower than the 1.7-1.8V they require on some of their modules.

I typically get RAM rated for the speed I want at the lowest voltage available. You can typically get higher speeds by increasing the voltage - but if you start with sticks that are already at the highest voltage you can safely run, there's no room for tweaking.

Out of 11 6GB DDR3 kits OCZ has listed at Newegg, 10 kits are rated for 1.65v with 1 rated at 1.85-1.9v

I guess Mushkin, Corsair, Crucial, A-Data, Kingston, Patriot and Geil can advertise their 6GB DDR3 kits as "Ultra Low Voltage Desktop Memory", since they all offer 1.5v kits?

Okay, I was ABOUT to get the 12gb... but do I REALLY need it? Do you think 6GB will be sufficient for me? Resource Manager says Ive used 4.5GB Max today. And today was just normal usage. After Effects, Video, and Web-Browsing today. Heres my task manager screenshot:

Ugh.. Intel isn't shipping my i7 until 2-3 weeks! Its making me think through so much stuff again.

You never mentioned if you were on Vista or XP so I'll go out on a limb and assume Vista 64. The more memory you have, the more Vista uses. Whether YOU need more or not, only YOU would know. I can tell you when I went from 4 gb to 8gb, I didn't notice a difference. But when I pulled 4 gbs OUT after I got used to 8gb, everything (snappiness) seemed quite a bit slower to my eyes.

Sigh.. I know. The Retail Edge deal was just too good to pass up on though. an D0 i7 for 140? I think im going to go ahead and get the 12GB. That shouldn't hurt my overclocking performance by much, should it?
