Im building a new deck for my house. I followed the rules and called all the utility companies and had them come out and mark all the buried lines in my back yard.

I rented a post hole digger with a 12" auger and my friend and I started drilling away. The first hole was 32" from the yellow paint in the grass marking the gas line. We drill down to 36" and we pull the auger out. I get down and start scooping the dirt that fell back down the hole and i felt something at the bottom of the hole. I clear the dirt away and low and behold its a 1" yellow pipe!! the Gas line!!!

I start sniffing and thank god we didnt cut it. Another 1/16 of an inch and that sucker would have been severed!!!! the hole was about 4 feet away from the house and all day i shutter to think what would have happened if we cut that line!!!

What a bunch of MORONS!!!! that idiot who marked that wrong almost killed or severly burned me and my friend and possiable caught my house on fire!!!!

The paper the gas guy left said to allow 18" on either side of the markings!!! we drilled 32" away!!!

I will be calling the gas company monday morning rasisng hell!!

I took pictures of it with my digital camera and would post them but i dont have a website.

Heh. Par for the course. Last year we needed to hork some ground to lay an additional fiber run from one building to another. So we called Time Warner (Telco not the stupid ass cable co!), Ameritech and EVERYONE else involved.

All come out and make their marks. We dig. Mind you this is a 300' run and we pay some of these folks in excess of $2M per month. Did they get it right?

Not even close. We ended up draggin' up one of our OC48's from TW!!! Thank goodness for dual entry is all I can say.
