Almost chopped off my finger at work today.

I got a new knife for work (I am a cook). I was chopping lettuce, and got my middle left finger under the blade of my new knife. I made a cut about 1/3inch deep in the tip of my finger. When it happened, I shook my finger a lot and blood spattered all over my station, and the one next to mine. Needless to say, my station was closed for the night. I didnt get stitches (in my finger?) but I bought some "Liquid Bandage". We'll see how that works.

That SUCKS...
I won't even attempt to cut yuca anymore.

Cooks knives are scary stuff. I worked in a kitchen for 3 months and got pretty damn good at cutting/dicing/slicing. As long as you pay attention and hold the knife correctly, you never seem to have problems. Its when you're distracted (talking to someone) that bad stuff seems to happen.

Yeah I'm pretty good with the knife.. But you have to get that bad cut sometime. It happens to everyone, or so I've heard. Hey, atleast I got to leave work early.

It was kind of cool when the blood spattered onto a meal someone was plating at the next station... 😉

Dude if you got injured at work you should get free medical aid that goes with it..

I didnt need medical aid. Going to the ER to have 'em put the exact same thing as "Liquid Bandage" on it, plus the five hour wait, annnnnd the dealing with OSHA and whatnot, it's not worth it.

Sigh. Getting cut bad and not going to the ER is a rite of passage for the kitchen.

Have you purchased a set of your own knives yet guapo? Have you asked the head chef or other line cooks for pointers on knife handling ? seriously.... I worked in a kitchen for 4 years and was always learning new things.

Next time it happens, show your devotion and put on a latex glove and keep going until a break. Also, finger cots (look like tiny condoms) are great. Beware the danger of the temptation to smoke though... in restaurants it seems the smokers are allowed/understood to take breaks every hour to smoke but non-smokers get cheated.

Seen those tomato dicers at restaurant kitchens? I worked at Jack in the Box, and someone's finger got into that thing while slicing a tomato. She got a couple of stitches. Then 3 months later, she spilled melting, out of the microwave chedder cheese on her arm.

I'm sure that felt good

It actually didnt hurt a TON. I was surprised. It bled a LOT though.

cuts from very sharp blades usually dont hurt, just bleed a ton. Sometimes you wont even realize you got cut.... dull knives hurt like hell
