GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Two boys accused of participating in a fire stunt that left their friend badly burned were placed on home detention Tuesday, pending a court hearing in August.

Officials said Thomas Jefferson, 15, of Johnson County, allowed one of the suspects to douse his shirt with gasoline July 5 in a Greenwood-area neighborhood. The other suspect then lit the shirt, officials said.

"They thought it would be cool for him to run down the road with his clothes on fire," said the White River Fire Department's Eric Brown. "The victim agreed that he wanted to do it."

Jefferson suffered burns to almost half his body and was in a coma Tuesday, RTV6's Ben Morriston reported.

The names of the suspects, both 15 years old, were not released.

Officials said the teens put out the flames with a garden hose. Someone called 911, and Jefferson was taken to a hospital.

Authorities are considering charging the suspects with arson, battery and criminal recklessness, Johnson County Deputy Prosecutor Paul Felix said.

A juvenile court judge ordered the suspects to serve home detention until their August court hearing, Morriston reported.

We can only hope he really does become a Darwin candidate.
That, or he ends up so horribly disfigured that no girl will ever let him close enough to attempt procreation.

Well, this one's still in the hospital so he may cross over into actual Darwin Award Candidate territory.

How stupid does one have to be....my mind can't even comprehend what has to be going through one's head to actually think that burning yourself and running across the street is any fun. But yea, there's still a chance for a good Darwin candidate!

hmmm...

Citing darwin would seem to indicate that you guys think the kid was born stupid. That being the case it's reasonable to assume you must therefore believe your own children may, by some fluke of genetics, be born equally as stupid.

How would it feel to be the parent of this child?

If one believes it's the parents fault, spmehow, for allowing their child to participate, it's equally the communities responsibility to ensure that the child is being well-taught. I agree that there's a certain level of personal accountability here, but I also perceive a social one.

I for one am ashamed that by some faling of our own, we allowed this poor deluded CHILD to injure himself.

If it were my child I would feel deeply ashamed that I had somehow produced, through either nature or nurture, a child so monumentaly stupid as to have done something like this. In fact, I honestly believe I would line up for a vascectomy just to ensure that I could never again produce a being of such limited intelect that they actually thought soaking themselves in gasoline & lighting themselves on fire was a good idea. Our responsibility as a community is to make sure that vascectomy actually takes place.

Sorry, but really, some people are just to stupid to be allowed to breed even if they do survive to such an age through some sort of sick twist of anti-darwinian fate.
