Alltel Vs. Unicel

Currently, I am with Unicel. I have been having trouble making calls, due to all circuits being busy. However, reception is so so. I heard different stories about Alltel, both good and bad.

Another thing are the plans. Currently, with Unicel I can get Unlimited local calls which is great because I can use it 24 / 7. However, if I make any long distance calls or receive calls when I'm out of the local area, I get charged with fees out the wazoo. The only reason I've stayed with Unicel thus far is their unlimited local, however....I can't stay local forever on my phone and my close friends want to move to alltel, which means they don't get free mobile to mobile with me on the other end(Since they are limited on minutes per month).

How about you guys? Experiences? Plans? Reception? Customer service? I want to hear. I really want to make sure I know more before I sign my cell service away for the next 2 years again.

The options HAVE to be these two, considering they're the only cell providers out here.

I've been with Alltel for three years, and have no complaints whatsoever.

I use Verizon, but get my free roaming out in the sticks on Alltel. (Michigan)

Alltel is in Michigan? I have never heard of this cell phone service provider.

I had Alltel in NE, but recently dropped them in favour of Verizon due to issues with Alltel's customer service department. I guess I was spoiled for the 4 years I had them because I had friends who worked there and were, of course, always polite and willing to work with me. When the last person I knew left their employ and I had to deal with the regular workforce, ugh.

Great service area, rarely a dropped call, bad CS in my experience. Never heard of this Unicel though.

Alltel is absolute crap

Care to elaborate?

we had a $30 300 anytime min/unlimited night and weekend family share plan with them. it started off just between my mom and sister for about a year. then i asked for a cell phone for my bday so my mom went to them and asked them to add another line under the same plan. then my brother wanted a cell phone for xmas, so my mom went once again and asked to add another line under the same plan.

we just got an outrageous bill for dec-jan so we took a close look at it. when they added my line, other than the 300 anytime mins, my plan was completely different. the two major differences were:
my mom and sister got free caller-id, mines $2/month.
they have unlimited nationwide nights and weekends, i have 500 LOCAL night and weekend minutes(no biggy since i dont use many minutes, but i do call long distance because i'm in college and many of my friends' cell numbers are out of town numbers)

my brother's "extra line" was entirely different. it wasn't even an extra line... it was an entirely new $50/month plan with 1000 anytime mins and 0 night and weekend mins. this was the major problem because my mom warned him not to use the cell phone too much since we were only supposed to have 300 anytime mins shared between 4 of us, but he could use it as much as he wanted after 9pm or on weekends b/c we had unlimited nights and weekends.

so my brother used his phone nonstop on nights and weekends thinking it was free. he racked up 1400 total mins, which was 400mins more than his actual plan had. needless to say, my mom was  when she saw the bill.

when she went over there to talk to them about it, they finally said that the new lines couldnt have the same plan cause it was a promotional plan at the time and no longer existed. so we had to upgrade to a $50/month family plan that supposedly had coverage all over the south east, but we soon found out that we start roaming just 30 miles from the city :frown:

Ah, I talked to Alltel just a bit about it. they said that normally you share minutes with every line you add. There are no dedicated minutes per line then? or how does this work? I thought about being added as a line, but I really don't want to be short on minutes.

Well, speaking of Unicel - it seems all their towers have been down all around kansas...anyone else affected by this?
